This article will show you how to reprogram your universal RCA remote control to work with your TV or other device (like a DVD player). Do this when your remote does not have a dedicated code search button. Use the RCA website to find the code for your device, then enter that code using the remote itself. If that doesn't work, use the search code feature found on any RCA universal remote control.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: How to find the code

  1. 1 Find the model number of the remote control. It includes numbers and letters and is located on the back of the remote control (for example, on the battery compartment cover).
  2. 2 Check with the manufacturer of the remote control. It should be indicated at the top of the remote control or on the battery compartment cover.
  3. 3 Open the RCA website. Go to http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/remote-code-finder/ in your computer's web browser.
  4. 4 Open the Revision Number menu. It's on the left side of the page.
  5. 5 Select the model number of your remote control. In the menu, find and click on the number that corresponds to the number on the remote.
    • When you open the menu, enter the first three characters of the model number to quickly find it.
  6. 6 Open the Device Brand Name menu. This is the second menu from the left.
  7. 7 Select the manufacturer of your remote control from the menu.
  8. 8 Open the Device Type menu. This is the first menu on the right.
  9. 9 Select the device you want to use the remote with. For example, to use the remote to control a TV, select “TV” from the “Device Type” menu.
    • If you can't find the device you're looking for, go to the last section.
  10. 10 Review the code. At least one four-digit code will appear in the center of the page (depending on the device, two or more codes may appear).

Part 2 of 3: How to enter the code

  1. 1 Turn on the device. For example, if you are going to use the remote to control your TV, turn on the TV.
  2. 2 Point the remote at the device. This will prevent interference from other devices when entering the code.
  3. 3 Hold the button with the name of the device. On the remote, find the button labeled with the name of the device for which you are programming the remote.
    • For example, if you are programming a remote for a TV, hold the TV button.
  4. 4 Enter the code while holding the device button. On the remote keypad, enter the four-digit code found on the RCA website.
    • For example, if you are programming a remote for a TV, hold the TV button and dial a four-digit code.
  5. 5 Release the device button. The code will be entered.
  6. 6 Look at the LED on the remote. If programming is successful, the remote control LED will blink once.
    • If the LED blinks four times, an error has occurred. Try entering a different code if the website displays multiple codes for the selected device.
  7. 7 Use the code search function. Even if the remote control does not have a button to search for codes, a similar function can be activated on any RCA remote control. Do this if you were unable to reprogram the remote using the codes found on the RCA website.

Part 3 of 3: How to enable and use the Find Codes feature

  1. 1 Turn on the device. For example, if you are programming a TV remote, make sure the TV is turned on.
  2. 2 Select a VCR and DVD player (if necessary). If you are programming a remote for a VCR or DVD player, follow these steps:
    • Press and hold the VCR / DVD button on the remote.
    • While holding down the VCR / DVD button, press 2 for a VCR or 3 for a DVD player.
    • Release both buttons and wait until the remote control LED stops flashing.
  3. 3 Turn on the search for codes function. Hold the Power button together with the button of the device for which you are programming the remote.
  4. 4 Release both buttons when prompted. When the LED indicator on the remote turns on (and does not turn off), release the device button and the Power button.
  5. 5 Point the remote at the device for which you are programming the remote. This will ensure that the remote enters the codes correctly.
  6. 6 Click the Play button. The keypad will enter a group of 10 separate codes into the device for which it is being programmed.
  7. 7 Wait for the LED indicator to stop flashing.
    • If the device turns off, skip the next step.
  8. 8 Press the "Play" button until the device turns off. Press Play, wait for the LED to stop flashing, then look at the device - if it has turned off, go to the next step.
  9. 9 Press the "Reverse" button on the remote. The device will check the last code sent.
  10. 10 Wait at least two seconds, and then check if the device has turned on. If it does, skip the next step.
  11. 11 Press the "Reverse" button until the device turns on. Wait at least two seconds between button presses. Once the device turns on, proceed to the next step.
  12. 12 Turn off the code search function. Hold the "Stop" button until the keypad LED turns on. You have successfully programmed the RCA remote for the selected device.

Tips

  • The code finder feature should work on any universal RCA remote, although it is generally easier and faster to manually enter the code for the selected device.

Warnings

  • Some modern universal remote controls may not work with older devices (such as old VCRs).
