Content

The task of fattening a pig can be reduced to a simple selection of the right feed combination.

Steps

  1. 1 Determine the percentage of protein in the feed. A piglet at the age of 8 weeks should be fed a feed with 17-18% protein content. Adult pigs - with 15% protein.
  2. 2 Decide which protein source to use. Leftovers are a good source (although some fear the spread of disease when using leftovers, as human diseases can be transmitted to pigs through direct contact, i.e. eating leftovers), as is soybean oil. For best results, feed your pigs both.
  3. 3 Decide on the type of grain you will be using. Regardless of the grain used, 50% of this should be corn. Barley, wheat and sorghum can also be used, but care must be taken with the latter. Sorghum treated against poultry should not be used as it has a reduced palatability. Also, yellow or white sorghum is better than red.
  4. 4 If you are preparing the food yourself, grind the grain (not too much) and mix with a protein source to create a complete food. If you buy feed, buy ground feed for a large number of pigs and granulated feed for a small number of pigs.
  5. 5 Decide how much the pig should get fat. If gaining weight quickly is more important, empty out all the feed and allow the pig to eat whatever it wants. If getting quality meat for tenderloin is more important, feed your pig 90% of its appetite. This will take longer to feed, but will give you better quality meat.
  6. 6 Mix 1/4 cup (60 ml) corn or vegetable oil with 2 eggs and add to the main feed mixture. Add any syrup to sweeten the taste.

Tips

  • A good tip when fattening a pig: do not slaughter it too early, a dead pig does not put on weight.

Warnings

  • Ground feed may have restrictions on the minimum purchase, so it will be dear to people with a small number of pigs.
