1 Wash your hair. Use shampoo and conditioner, if necessary, with which you usually wash your hair.

2 Dry your hair halfway. After getting out of the shower, wring out your hair and pat dry with a towel. Hair should be damp, but no water should flow from it. Do not dry your hair, otherwise you will not get tight curls.

3 Apply a styling product to your hair. Use a medium to strong gel or mousse. The styling product will also moisturize your hair and dry as you roll it.

4 Curl your hair in the front line.

• Use a comb to separate a section of hair that is the same width as the curler and pull the section of hair forward. Take a section of hair, pull it up like a Native American Mohawk. Start curling a section of hair with curlers. Wind in the direction you want to curl.
• Keep the curlers and hair tightly pressed together and twist until you reach the scalp. Secure the curlers with the hairpin or hair clip that came with the curler.

5 Roll the rest of your hair in a curler, moving away from the front hairline.

6 Dry your hair on a low to medium heat. Drying time depends on the thickness and length of your hair. Remove one curler and check if the curl is dry. Continue drying your hair if it is still damp to the touch.

7 Remove the curlers one by one when the hair is completely dry. Do this slowly to avoid tangling your hair.

8 Tidy up your curls and finish styling. Spread the strands with your hands. Apply hairspray to lock in style.

Tips

• If you've never used a curler before, use a plastic curler. These are smooth curlers. They provide the best curls but are tough to deal with.
• You may need different diameters of curlers depending on the length of your hair and whether you have bangs and whether your hair is cut in layers.
• You can buy hair curlers at your hardware store, beauty supply store. Choose the curler that suits you. You need to wrap the strand around your hair curler at least three times to get beautiful curls.
• Use the pins to secure the curlers where you need them.
• If you have time, air dry your hair naturally. This can be time consuming, plan your day accordingly.
• If you have a hairdryer, blow dry your hair. This is the fastest way to dry your hair with curlers. Heads-caps for ordinary hair dryers are also sold.

Warnings

• Make sure the hairpins are holding your hair securely. Perfect curlers won't make perfect curls if they're not secured in place.
• Do not comb your hair after removing the curler. This will cause the curls to disappear and the waves to remain.
