This article will show you how to rip the contents of a DVD to your computer as MP4 files so you can play them without a disc. Remember, it is illegal to perform the actions described here on someone else's disc or distribute MP4 files.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: HandBrake

1. 1 Open the HandBrake download page. Go to https://handbrake.fr/. HandBrake is a file converter software that supports Windows and macOS.
   • HandBrake works on most versions of Windows and macOS, but sometimes crashes on macOS Sierra.
2. 2 Click on Download HandBrake (Download). You will find this red button on the left side of the page. The HandBrake installation file will download to your computer.
   • Depending on your browser, you may have to confirm the download first or select a download folder.
   • The button has the current version of HandBrake written on it (for example, "1.0.7").
3. 3 Double click on the downloaded HandBrake setup file. It is marked with a pineapple icon and is located in your downloads folder.
   • If you can't find the installer file, type “handbrake” in Spotlight (Mac) or the Start Menu (Windows) and click on “Handbrake” in the search results.
4. 4 Follow the instructions on the screen. To install HandBrake:
   • Windows - Allow to install HandBrake (if prompted) and click Next> I Agree> Install> Finish.
   • Mac - open the installation file and drag Handbrake to the Applications folder.
5. 5 Insert the DVD into your computer. The DVD drive is located on the right side of laptops or the front of desktops. To open the disc tray, press the button on the front of the drive.
   • New Mac computers do not have floppy drives. In this case, buy an external DVD drive (it costs about 5,000 rubles).
   • You may need to close the media player that opened the DVD first.
6. 6 Start HandBrake. Click on the pineapple and glass icon.
   • This icon is most likely on the desktop. If not, search for HandBrake using Spotlight (Mac) or in the Start menu (Windows).
7. 7 Click on the drive icon. It looks like a DVD and is located on the left under the File tab.
   • Most likely, you will also see the title of the movie here.
   • If you don't see the drive icon, restart HandBrake.
8. 8 Change the conversion parameters (if necessary). By default HandBrake converts files to MP4 format, but it's best to make sure the following settings are set like this:
   • File format - in the “Output Settings” section in the middle of the page in the “Container” menu, find the “MP4” option.If there is another option in the menu, open it and select “MP4”.
   • File Resolution - select the appropriate resolution on the right side of the window (for example, 1080p). This parameter sets the quality of the file.
9. 9 Click on Browse (Overview). You will find this option on the File Destination line. A window will open.
10. 10 Select the folder where the MP4 file will be sent and enter its name. To do this, click on the desired folder in the left pane, and then enter the file name in the line at the bottom of the window.
11. 11 Click on Save (Save). You will find this option at the bottom of the window.
12. 12 Click on Start encode (Start converting). You will find this button at the top of the window. The contents of the DVD will be copied to the specified folder on your computer as MP4 files. When copying is complete, double-click the MP4 file to play it.

Method 2 of 2: VLC

1. 1 Launch VLC media player. Click on the orange and white cone icon.
   • To make sure your computer has the latest version of VLC, click Help (at the top of the window)> Check for Updates. If an update is available, install it.
   • If you don't have VLC media player on your computer, download it from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html.
2. 2 Insert the DVD into your computer. The DVD drive is located on the right side of laptops or the front of desktops.
   • New Mac computers do not have floppy drives. In this case, buy an external DVD drive (it costs about 5,000 rubles).
   • You may need to close the media player that opened the DVD first.
3. 3 Open the menu Media. You will find it in the upper left corner.
4. 4 Click on Open disc. It's at the top of the Media menu.
5. 5 Check the box next to No Disc Menu. You will find this option in the Select Disk section of the Source window.
   • If your computer has multiple drives, open the Disk Drive menu and click on the movie's name.
6. 6 Click the arrow icon next to Play. You will find this option at the bottom of the window. A menu will open.
7. 7 Please select Convert on the menu.
8. 8 Make sure the target file format is MP4. To do this, look at the menu to the right of the "Profile" in the middle of the window
   • If there is no “MP4” option in the window, open the indicated menu and select “MP4”.
9. 9 Click on Overview. You will find this button in the lower right corner.
10. 10 Select a folder to save the final file. Do this in the left pane.
11. 11 Save the file in MP4 format. To do this, enter in the window filename.mp4where instead of "filename" substitute the name of the movie.
12. 12 Click on Save. The settings will be saved.
13. 13 Click on To begin. You will find this option at the bottom of the window. The contents of the DVD will be copied to the specified folder on your computer as MP4 files.
    • The copying process will take some time, depending on the performance of your computer and the total size of the DVD content.
    • On the progress bar (at the bottom of the VLC window), you can monitor what percentage of the content has been converted.
14. 14 Double click on the destination file. It will open in the main media player. To make sure everything is in order with the file, open it in VLC.

Tips

• When converting, plug your laptop into an electrical outlet to prevent battery drain.

Warnings

• Generally, files converted with VLC will not open in other media players.
• It is illegal to copy files from other people's DVDs and / or distribute the copied files.
