1 Prepare strips of paper from which you will weave the basket. Use three sheets of A4 size engineering paper for this. On the piece of paper that will be the bottom of the basket, draw a horizontal line 9 cm from the top of the sheet and another 9 cm from the bottom. These lines will help when weaving the bottom. Then cut the paper into strips 1.25 cm wide.
  • Choose one sheet of engineering paper in a neutral color, such as brown, black, or white. It will be used for the bottom of the basket. The other two sheets can be of any color. These will form the decorative sides of your basket.
  • 2 Weave the bottom of the basket. Arrange 8 strips of paper (the color chosen for the bottom) in a row so that the lines drawn on them face up and form a continuous line. Starting at the top line, weave another strip of paper through the ones you laid out, alternately passing it above and below the strips. Center the position of the horizontally woven strip. Taking another stripe of the same color, weave it again, but in the opposite manner, so that it now alternates under and above the stripes. Then slide the two woven stripes together, joining the edges.
    • Weave 8 stripes in this way.
    • The finished bottom will have a size of 10x10 cm and will fit between the lines drawn on the stripes. You will have a square with 8 stripes sticking out from each side.
  • 3 Fold up the strips sticking out of the bottom. All sides will be the same height.
    • It will be convenient to put a 10x10 cm box or a board on the wicker bottom to bend the strips about it. This will facilitate the next steps.
  • 4 Bind a strip of colored paper through the vertical stripes, folding it at the corners of the basket.
    • To weave the entire perimeter, you need about 1.5 strips. You can simply secure the strips with tape or glue. Try to hide the junction of the stripes from the inside, hiding it under the stripes coming from the bottom. This will give the basket a neat, seamless look. At the junction of the ends, fasten them with tape or glue, also hiding the junction.
  • 5 Repeat the above step with another stripe of the same color. Remember to alternate the weave sequence to create a checkered pattern.
    • Continue working all the way to the top.
  • 6 Finish shopping cart. Tape or glue the ends of the bottom strips to the last horizontally woven strip. Then glue a slightly wider bottom-colored strip along the top edge of the basket from the inside, overlaying it over the vertical stripes. Add a similar strip to the front.
    • If you want to add a handle, simply glue the ends of another strip to the basket on opposite sides, even before gluing the upper decorative strips.

  • Method 2 of 2: Round Newspaper Basket

    1. 1 Roll newspaper sheets into tubes. First, cut the newspaper sheets vertically into 4 pieces (not necessarily perfectly straight). Then place a wooden skewer on the corner of one of the sheets. Place it at an angle so that when you roll the paper around it, you create a tube that is longer than the length of the sheet itself. Roll the paper tightly. When finished curling, put a drop of glue on the last end of the paper to prevent the tube from unfolding.
      • You will need a lot of tubing, so repeat this procedure many times.
      • Instead of a skewer stick, you can take a knitting needle, a wooden pin with a diameter of 3 mm or something similar, long, thin and round.
    2. 2 Take a cardboard circle to form the bottom. Choose the size of your choice, depending on the desired size of the basket. To weave the bottom, you need to take an odd number of tubes. Spread them out in beams on a circle.
      • For larger baskets, you need more tubes for the bottom. The closer the bottom rays are to each other, the denser the weaving will be.
    3. 3 Take a second cardboard twist of the same size for the final shaping of the bottom. Glue it on top of the first circle on top of the tubes so that they are fixed between the two circles.
      • While the glue dries, put something heavy on top of the bottom so that everything turns out neatly and reliably.
    4. 4 Bend the arms up and start braiding. Bend the end of the working tube around one of the beams and glue. Begin to weave it through the beams, sweeping above and below them. Make sure that the weaving turns fit as tightly as possible to each other (first to the bottom, and then to each subsequent turn).
      • When weaving, the tubes will flatten. This will make the basket even more durable.
    5. 5 When one tube ends, fasten it to the next, passing the end of one tube to the end of the other. You will end up with one long tube that will form the entire basket.
    6. 6 Continue braiding until you reach the top of the arms or the desired basket height. Then go around the end of the working tube around the last beam and glue.
    7. 7 Bend the arms to complete the basket. Trim all the beams about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the top of the basket, then:
      • for each ray sticking out from the outside (where in the last row of weaving the working tube passed from the inside), bend the end inside the basket and glue it from the inside (fix the end with a clothespin while the glue dries);
      • for each beam sticking out from the inside (where in the last row of weaving the working tube passed from the outside), bend the end outward, but instead of gluing, slip it into the second row of weaving from the top, fixing it securely in the weaving.
