With an iCloud account, you can send messages from iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone to other iCloud users for free, but first of all, you need to activate iMessage.
Steps
1 Click the "Settings" icon on the home screen to launch the corresponding application.
2 Click iCloud.
3 If you already have iCloud installed, enter your address and password. Click the "Settings" button. 
4 Click on Messages.
5 Switch the iMessage setting to “ON”.
Tips
- If you are going to use iMessage exclusively for incoming and outgoing messages, then the "Send as SMS" setting is better to be switched to "OFF".
- To send and receive messages, you need a working Internet connection.
Warnings
- When traveling abroad, you can send messages via iMessage using Wi-Fi for free. In this case, make sure that SMS is disabled for you to avoid additional costs.
