Carpets are popular among many people for their softness, but they also get dirty quickly. Due to being made of absorbent material, carpets often absorb odors caused by falling food and drinks, problems and smoke. If your carpet smells bad, don't even think about buying a new carpet. Maybe you just need to do a little more cleaning. With some household products, you can get rid of the smell on the carpet.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Handling odors in general

1. 

   Clean up dirty spots. Before deodorizing your carpet, you need to remove dry dirt, blot wet areas, and dab soap on visible stains. Carpets should be in good condition before you can handle odors.

   Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet. Baking soda has the effect of eliminating odors absorbed in the carpet. It's a good idea to sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the carpet, so buy a large box for each room you need to treat. If the blooms fall in a pile, spread them evenly with your hands.

Method 2 of 4: Eliminate smoke odors

   Mix white vinegar with ammonia. White vinegar and ammonia will decompose smoke odors in rooms, including carpets. While this mixture won't completely remove the smoke odors from your carpet, it will also start the deodorization process.

Method 3 of 4: Deodorizing pets

1. 

   Pat the wet area dry. Use a paper towel to dry the urine. If the stain is already dry, wet it with clean water and pat dry with a paper towel.

   Use green dish soap. Blue dish soap is often recommended for the treatment of new pet stains. Pour some dish soap into a wet paper towel. Blot the stain to clean the urine.

   Cover the stain with baking soda. While the carpet is still wet, sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the carpet surface. Baking soda will probably get wet, but that's not important.

   Leave it on overnight. Baking soda and soap will take several hours to work. If the stain is small, you should cover it with a tissue during the treatment.

   • If the odor persists, you can pour hydrogen peroxide on the urine stain; however, it is advisable to try first on a blind spot of the carpet, as hydrogen peroxide can discolor the carpet.
   • Commercial products that use enzymes to decompose odors are also available and do not require additional cleaning.

   Let the white vinegar soak for about 5 minutes. You need to keep track of when using vinegar. Make sure pets and children stay away from the place being handled.
   • If using hydrogen peroxide, you need to let it sit for about 10-15 minutes.

7. 

   Use a soft cloth dipped in detergent. Wipe off any remaining baking soda and blot the stain dry. Once the carpet is dry, sniff it again to see if it still smells bad. If so, you may need to use a steam vacuum cleaner.
   • If the carpet is soaked in wet urine, you may need to change to another carpet to remove the odor.

8. 

   Use a steam vacuum cleaner. If your pet's odors get too much in the carpet, you may need to dispose of the entire carpet with a steam cleaner, such as Green Machine or Rug Doctor. You can use a commercial deodorant, or make your own deodorant with white vinegar and water. Slide the machine over the carpet and let it dry. You may have to run the machine several times to remove all the odors.
   • If the odor is deeply absorbed, you can use an enzyme cleaner that can help inactivate the bacteria that cause bad odors. Just wet the carpet and let it dry, so this product is easy to use too.

Method 4 of 4: Eliminate the musty smell

1. 

   Determine the cause of the musty smell. If you smell musty things, the humidity in your home is probably too high. Just treating the musty smell will not be enough to make the carpet scent again, as the mold spores will continue to multiply. Instead, change your routine to reduce the warmth in your home. Turn on the fan in the shower, open the windows to let the steam escape when bathing or cooking, and use a dehumidifier.

   Use a wet and dry vacuum cleaner to absorb water. If your carpet gets wet, you can use a wet, dry vacuum cleaner to limit mold growth by removing moisture that is a favorable environment for mold.
