It is very important to keep the piercings clean, otherwise the piercing will take a long time to heal or possibly become infected. Fortunately, cleaning nose tips does not take much time and effort. So there's no reason to hesitate without starting from Step 1 below.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Cleaning nasal tips

  1. Clean the nose tips 2 times a day. You need to wash your nose tips twice a day - once in the morning and once in the evening - until your nose is well healed. Too little cleaning can cause the nose to become dirty and infected, and too much can lead to irritation and the piercings take a long time to heal.

  2. Prepare a salt solution. The easiest way to clean a nose tip is to use a saline solution. To make the salt solution, you can mix 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt in 8 ounces (1 cup) of warm water. Or you can purchase a pre-packaged sterile saline solution at a pharmacy.

  3. Hand washing. Before touching your nose, it is very important to wash your hands with antibacterial soap. Otherwise, bacteria from the hands can come into contact with the pier (essentially an open wound) and cause infection.
  4. Dip a cotton ball in the saline solution. Hold a clean cotton ball dipped in salt solution. Gently press a cotton ball against the nose tip and hold for about 3-4 minutes. Be careful when removing the cotton ball, as it can get caught in the pier or studs.

  5. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. After washing, you can use a clean cotton ball, wet tissue or a dry paper towel to gently pat dry the area around your nose. Avoid using towels, as towels can carry bacteria and become entangled in piercings or studs.
  6. Use a cotton swab to remove the scales. You need to wash your face under the nose piercing to get rid of skin flakes. Otherwise, the scabs can tear the skin and cause the piercings to become inflamed.
    • This can be done by dipping a clean cotton swab in the saline solution and rubbing it around the back of the rivet or the piercings inside the nostrils.
    • Do not rub too hard to avoid pushing the studs out of your nose.
  7. Use a little lavender essential oil to help the piercing heal. Lavender essential oil lubricates the nose tips, relieves pain and helps the piercings heal. After you've cleaned your piercings, you can use a cotton swab to apply some lavender essential oil to your nose tips.
    • Tighten the rivet or rotate the pier so that the oil gets into the piercing, then wipe off excess oil with a clean paper towel to avoid irritation.
    • Lavender essential oil is sold in health food stores, supermarkets or drug stores. Make sure the essential oil bottle is labeled "BP" or "for pharmaceutical use".

Part 2 of 2: Know what to avoid

  1. Avoid using strong antiseptics. Do not use a strong antiseptic such as Bactine, Bacitracin, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or tea tree oil for nasal cleaning as they can irritate and / or damage the skin and cause the piercings to heal.
  2. Avoid makeup to cover your nose piercing. Make-up is not allowed to contact your nose piercing to avoid clogging and lead to infection. The same goes for tanning lotions and other cosmetic products.
  3. Do not remove the piercings or studs until the piercing heals. The piercings can close the mouth within a few hours if you remove the nose piercings or studs.
    • Pushing the studs into the piercing after the mouth has started closing can cause pain, inflammation and infection.
    • Therefore, you should avoid removing the rivet or piercing the nose from the piercing until the piercing heals (usually takes 12-24 weeks).
  4. Avoid tub baths, hot baths or swimming pools. Avoid soaking your piercings in swimming pools and hot tubs, as this is often a haven for harmful bacteria that can lead to infection. But if necessary, cover your piercing with a waterproof bandage (available at drug stores) to cover and protect your piercing.
  5. Avoid using a dirty pillow while sleeping. Dirty pillows are another potential source of bacteria, so change your pillowcase often.
  6. Avoid touching the nose piercing if it is not needed. Avoid touching or playing with your nose tips. Only when cleaning the nose piercing after washing your hands. It is not necessary to twist or rotate the studs / tips while waiting for the piercing to heal.

Advice

  • Absolutely do not put dirty fingers in the nostrils as this may cause infection.
  • A hot shower can help soften the flakes around your piercings.
  • Do not wash the nose piercing more than 3 times a day. Cleaning too much can dry out the piercings and cause infection.

Warning

  • Do not peel skin (no matter how much you want) to avoid causing infection.
  • Always use a clean cotton swab when cleaning the inside of your nostrils. If not, you will introduce bacteria from the outside into your nostrils.
  • Do not use silver rings in place of nose tips. Silver rings are dangerous because they can oxidize the wound and permanently darken the nose (called silver salt poisoning). Silver rings can also cause an allergic reaction.
