This wikiHow teaches you how to prevent your Windows 10 computer from updating automatically. Unfortunately, there's no way to turn off automatic updates entirely, but you can defer indefinitely using the Services program or switch Wi-Fi to a traffic-restricted network. You can also disable automatic updates for applications and drivers on your computer if you wish.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Turn off the Update Service
. Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen.
. Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen. Menu Start will pop up.
(Setting). Click the gear icon in the lower left of the menu Start. The Settings window will open.
Network & Internet. This option is in the Settings window.
. The switch will turn on
and prevents Windows from downloading any updates over the current network.- If the switch above is colored and next to it says "On" then the Wi-Fi has been switched to a traffic restricted connection.
Method 3 of 4: By Group Policy Editor
. Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen.
on the left side of the "Administrative Templates" folder.- Click the mark
on the left side of the "Windows Components" folder. - Scroll down and click on the "Windows Update" folder.
, choose Power
and click Restart (Reboot) from the pop-up menu. After the computer reboots, your update preferences will be saved.- You can still enable manual updates as they become available.
Method 4 of 4: On the Windows Store App
. Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen. Menu Start will pop up.
Microsoft Store. This option is usually on the right side of the menu Start.- If you don't see the Store icon in the menu StartPlease enter store go to the search bar at the bottom of the menu and click Store when the app appears at the top of the menu.
next to the option "Update apps automatically". The switch will turn off
.- After you turn this switch off, Windows application updates will also be disabled.
Advice
- Automatic updates often improve the usefulness and security of Windows, but they can slow down older computers.
Warning
- Disabling Windows Updates will make the system vulnerable to malware. We strongly recommend that you do not disable this feature on Windows.
