This wikiHow teaches you how to disable Caps Lock - the capitalization feature on a Windows or Mac computer. To turn off Caps Lock on a functional computer is as simple as pressing the "Caps Lock" key again; but if the Caps Lock key is stuck then you need to fix the keyboard. You can also turn off Caps Lock completely if you are not in use.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Turn off Caps Lock

Method 2 of 3: Turn off Caps Lock on Windows

   and choose Restart in the pop-up menu. After the computer reboots, the Caps Lock key will no longer work.
   • You can delete the file you created after your computer reboots.

Method 3 of 3: Turn off Caps Lock on Mac

1. Open the Apple menu

   

   
   
   . Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
2. Click System Preferences… (Customize system). Options are in the drop-down menu. The System Preferences window will appear.
3. Click Keyboard (Keyboard). This keyboard-shaped option is located in the System Preferences window. The Keyboard window will open.
4. Click the card Keyboard in the upper left corner of the Keyboard window.
5. Click Modifier Keys ... (Modifier key). This option is in the lower-right corner of the Keyboard window. A window will pop up.
6. Click the drop-down box Caps Lock in the middle of the pop-up. A drop-down menu will appear.
7. Click No Action (No Action) is in the drop-down menu.
   • If your Mac has a Touch Bar instead of a row of function keys, you can click Escape here to combine the "Escape" feature with the Caps Lock key.
8. Click OK. This blue button is at the bottom of the pop-up. Your changes will be saved, and from now on the Caps Lock key will not respond to any action when pressed.
   • If you later find that you can still activate Caps Lock, restart your Mac to reinforce the change. Click Apple menu, choose Restart ... and choose Restart when prompted.

Advice

• If you want to re-enable the Caps Lock key on Windows, you need to delete the file disable_caps_lock.reg from "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Keyboard Layout" section in Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Warning

• If the Caps Lock key is stuck in the "On" position and you cannot turn off Caps Lock, take your computer to a repair center.
