This section provides step-by-step instructions on how to create internal and external links when editing a wiki.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Link an internal page

This will add a link to a page on wikiHow.com.

The easy method

1. 

   Place square brackets] around the word you want to link. Example: In wikiHow, write], which would create Relax. Post titles are case sensitive, so you must have the title correctly capitalized. advertisement

Advanced editing method

1. 

   
   
   Enter edit mode by clicking “Edit”. In wikiHow click again to get to “Advanced Editing”.

   Highlight the word you want to link internally to a page.

   Click on the internal link icon, the 3rd button after the bold (B) and italic (I) buttons.

4. 

   Click save. advertisement

Method 2 of 2: Link to external site

This will add a link to the page that is "not" on the wikiHow site.

1. 

   Enter edit mode by clicking "Edit". In wikiHow click again to go to "Advanced Editing".

2. 

   Highlight the words you want to link to the external website.

3. 

   Click the external link button, the 4th button right after the internal link button

4. 

   Insert the URL inside of the square brackets, before the word for which you want the link outside.

5. 

   It looks like this.

   Make sure there is a single space between the URL and externally linked words.

7. 

   Click save. advertisement

Advice

• Be sure to have a unique space between the URL and the associated word.
• The word "red" means the page doesn't exist. The word "green" means the page already exists.
• It helps if you read the wiki editing instructions at MediaWiki.
• You don't need to use Advanced Editing to add links in any way. Just keep in mind the code outlined here.

Warning

• Do not include "how to" in the link. ] will not work, but] okay.
