Torrents (in simple terms) are files shared between peers, not including the server. The files are passed from the seeder to the requesting client (leecher or peer). You can download the µtorrent program and use it to download your desired movies, music or games. Note: uploading (or seeding) copyrighted material is illegal in many countries.

Steps

  1. Download µTorrent now www.utorrent.com. There are versions of µTorrent available for different platforms, so be sure to download the correct Mac version. Then, select where to save the downloaded file (such as your desktop or downloads folder).
    • Once the download is complete, double-click the uTorrent.dmg file to unzip the program.
    • Drag µTorrent and drop it into the "Applications" folder.

  2. Open µTorrent by double-clicking on the program icon. The program will launch, but you will have to find a torrent of data to download online.
    • During the installation, µTorrent will try to install many other unnecessary programs, including a toolbar. If you feel it is unnecessary, read the small text of the process and check only the boxes you want.

  3. Visit a trustworthy and searchable torrent site. Enter the name of the data you want to load into the search bar. You need to search specifically, otherwise you will get random results.
    • For example, if you just search for "WWE" you will get a lot of results and possibly not relevant content, so use more specific keywords, like "WWE Wrestlemania 29 New York /. New Jersey Full Event ", you will find the torrent you need.
    • If you don't know which torrent site, use a search engine to find the movie / game / music / book you want to download and add the keyword "torrent". You can also add the keyword "mac" to narrow your search.

  4. See the list of available torrents. Take a look at the first few items on the list and choose a torrent based on size (large size will have high quality, but will download longer) and the type of file you need (avi, mkv, mp4, etc.).
    • If you are wondering, choose the torrent with the highest seed rate.
    • Click on the file and view the comments section. You need to check if people say the torrent is working, with the right files, good quality, and so on. If you do not have or very few comments then do not risk downloading.
  5. Download torrent. Click the little magnet icon or the "Get this Torrent" link. Make sure you don't click on "download direct", "download" or "magnet download", otherwise you will be attacked by pop-ups and redirects.
    • While you are torrenting, you will begin to seed portions of the file you downloaded.
    • Even if the download is complete, µTorrent will continue to upload files to other users in the BitTorrent network. Only when you delete the file from µTorrent or quit µTorrent will the upload stop.
  6. Wait for the torrent to finish downloading. µTorrent will automatically open the file / link, or you will be asked to open it in the program and set µTorrent as the default. µTorrent will also open a second window for you to click the "OK" button in the lower right corner.
    • The download time will depend on the size of the file and the number of "seeders" (who are sharing the file).
    • The more seeders the file will download quickly as the torrent can get parts of the file.
  7. Click the "Completed" tab to find the file once downloaded. You can open the file by right clicking and selecting show in finder, or by clicking on the magnifying glass image.
    • If you're downloading a movie, right-click the file, click "Open With", and select your favorite media player.

Advice

  • You need to check if the torrent was uploaded by a trusted provider. Next to the trusted username is usually a purple or green skull.
  • Always check the seeder and leecher counts on the torrent. The more seeders, the faster the download speed. Conversely, the more leecher it is, the slower the download will be.

Warning

  • Uploading (or seeding) copyrighted material is illegal in many countries.
