This article shows you how to add international phone numbers to WhatsApp contacts on Android phones or tablets. Since WhatsApp retrieves contact information from the Contacts app on your Android device, you need to save your friend's international phone number with the plus sign (+) in front.

Steps

1. 

   Open the Android Contacts app. You will find an application called "Contacts" in the app drawer. Usually this app is blue, red or orange with a white border around the head icon.

   Tap on the icon to create a new contact. This option is usually the plus sign (+).

3. 

   Choose where to save. Depending on the contact application you will be asked to select an account and / or where to save it (external memory or SIM card). This is where WhatsApp will save your new contact.

   Enter a name for the new contact.

   Enter the contact's international phone number. In the phone number field, you will enter the plus sign "+" first, followed by the country code (such as 44 for Great Britain) and enter the phone number.
   • For example, the phone number in the UK would be +447981555555.
   • Phone numbers in Mexico will have to have the number 1 after the country code (+52).
   • The phone number in Argentina (country code +54) should have a 9 between the country code and area code. Leave the default "15" from Argentina phone numbers so that international contacts will only have 13 digits.
