Exterior and interior concrete surfaces do not always have to have a boring monotonous gray. You can make the concrete surface beautiful and fun with a few coats of paint. Concrete painting is a simple and inexpensive task that any homeowner can do. In order to paint the concrete beautifully, you must clean and properly treat the surface to be painted, use the appropriate paint and wait a sufficient time for the paint to dry.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Prepare the concrete surface

  1. Clean the concrete surface with soap and warm water, and scrape off old paint if any. First, you need to wipe away the leaves, dirt from the concrete surface, then scrape off the old paint or dirt with a high-pressure cleaner or paint scraper and iron brush. Scrub away mud and dirt from the concrete. Don't worry about stains getting into the concrete if nothing is on the surface.
    • Remove vines, moss or other plants that cover the concrete surface.
    • You need the concrete surface as clean as possible to get the best coating.

  2. Use chemical tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) to clean dirty and greasy areas to ensure the paint does not discolor in the future. You can buy TPS at most home repair shops. Just mix this chemical with water according to the ratio instructions on the packaging, remove grease and oil stains, then rinse detergent on the concrete. Wait for the surface of the concrete to dry completely before proceeding to the next steps.

  3. Use concrete patching paint to fix major defects such as cracks, holes or bumpy surfaces. You need to make the concrete surface as smooth and evenly as possible. Cracks or cracks are where moisture seeps under the paint and slowly loosens the finish. Read the manufacturer's instructions for the waiting times for paint to dry.

  4. Seal concrete surfaces indoors to prevent moisture from seeping through the cement. Concrete fillings are quite expensive, but they are the best way to make sure your work is not damaged. Concrete is a material with many small holes in the surface, which means moisture can accumulate in the interior and damage the paint. You need to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper preparation and use.
    • This step is not necessary if you are painting concrete outside.

Method 2 of 2: Paint concrete

  1. Check the weather forecast to ensure 2-3 consecutive dry days before applying concrete outdoors. You will need to wait one night for the first coat to dry, then reapply the second coat, and possibly the third. Each coat needs to dry overnight, so it will take about 24 hours for the polish to dry completely. Paint should only be carried out in favorable weather.
    • In some cases, it takes 24 hours to dry completely. That's why it takes a lot of time to complete the painting process.
  2. Use a paint roller to primer. Before painting, you need to paint a primer to ensure the paint adhesion to the concrete. Paint a primer on concrete to ensure good adhesion of the paint. Again, follow the manufacturer's instructions for how to use it and how long to wait for the paint to dry.
    • If you are painting over an old color layer or painted outdoors, you may need two coats of primer. Remember to let the first coat dry completely before applying the second coat.
  3. Buy paint that is appropriate for the type of concrete. It is best to use elastic concrete paint when the concrete temperature changes. This paint is sometimes sold as an elastic paint or an elastic wall paint. Since this paint is much thicker than regular paint, you will need to use a high capacity paint roller or paint brush.
  4. Use a paint roller to apply a thin, even layer. Starting at one corner or the top edge of the wall, roll slowly and evenly over the entire concrete surface. There is no need to apply multiple coats per coat - you will apply 1-2 more coats when the first coat is dry, so don't apply more at once.
  5. The next afternoon, apply a second coat. Once the paint has dried overnight, you can apply another coat. You should paint at least one more thin layer, or you can apply a third coat for a darker and more even color.
  6. Wait for the paint to dry for 1-2 days before stepping on or placing anything on the concrete surface. Allow the final coat to dry for at least 24 hours before moving objects on top or near freshly painted concrete to ensure a smooth and beautiful finish. advertisement

Advice

  • Do not paint the surface coating more than 2 layers (with roller roller, spray paint). In case of painting the 3rd layer, it must be sanded to create adhesion.
  • Normally, people only paint concrete when it is necessary to cover an existing concrete sheet. New concrete should not be painted until it has stabilized for at least 28 days.

Warning

  • Take safety precautions when using tri-sodium phosphate, as this chemical can damage your eyes, lungs and skin.
  • If you paint concrete floors, use a floor texture additive that can be mixed directly into the paint to prevent slipping.
