Lemon juice has long been used to naturally and effectively lighten hair color. After mixing the lemon juice solution and spraying it on your hair, you will have to expose your hair to the sun, so don't forget to wear sunscreen! You can see results after about an hour of sun exposure, but the change will be minimal. Repeat this process several times in a row for a more pronounced effect. Note that lemon juice is a natural and inexpensive ingredient, but it's not a good way to lighten your hair.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Mix the lemon juice mixture and spray it on your hair

  1. Squeeze the juice of three lemons. Cut each lemon in half, then remove the seeds with the tip of the knife. Squeeze the lemon halves into a bowl or measuring cup. You may need a little more or less, depending on the length of your hair.

  2. Pour 2 parts lemon juice and 1 part dry conditioner into a spray bottle. Pour lemon juice into a clean spray bottle. Add a small amount of dry conditioner to the tank. Replace the nozzle and shake well to dissolve the two ingredients completely.
    • If you don't have a dry conditioner, you can replace it with water. Dry conditioner is often a better choice, however, as lemon juice can make hair dry and brittle.

  3. Protect skin with a layer of sunscreen. You're about to use the power of the sun to activate the citric acid's lightening effects, so protect your skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun. You should apply a good sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on your face and body.
    • Carry a bottle of sunscreen with you outside and reapply when you sweat or swim in the water.

  4. Spray the solution all over your head to dye all of your hair. To cover the mixture evenly, spray all over your hair and gently brush a few times. Make sure your hair is damp, but not soaking wet.
    • If you just want to lighten the roots of your hair, tips or create highlights in your hair, focus on spraying on those parts.
    • For an ombre effect, focus on spraying on the lower half of your hair.
  5. Use a cotton ball dipped in the mixture to lighten parts of your hair. Once the cotton has soaked in the mixture, take it down the areas of your hair that you want to lighten. This way will create highlight trails. Pay attention to these sections of hair when dyeing, as you will need to repeat it many times to get a noticeable result.
    • To make sure you don't treat one part of your hair twice and leave other parts of your hair behind, you can wrap the foil around the parts soaked in lemon juice.
  6. Leave your hair in the sun for 1-2 hours. Go outside for about 2 hours so that the sun can activate the lemon juice and give it a lightening effect. When the mixture in the hair dries, it hardens and is slightly brittle. This is normal! You can stroke it with your hands, but don't try to brush it off at this point to remove the mixture. advertisement

Part 2 of 3: Rinse hair, use conditioner and repeat the process

  1. Rinse off the lemon juice from your hair. After 1-2 hours of sun drying, go inside, stand in the shower, and rinse the mixture off your hair. Lemon juice makes hair very dry, so be sure to rinse it thoroughly.
  2. Use a deep conditioner. Once you've rinsed your hair, apply a deep conditioner to your hair from root to tip. Leave conditioner on hair for 10 minutes (or as instructed on product), then rinse thoroughly.
  3. Dry and style as usual. After the first dyeing, you will begin to notice a very mild hair color lightening effect! If your hair is still a bit dry, apply a moisturizer, such as a moisturizing styling cream. You can also apply a very small amount of deep conditioner to the ends of your hair to smooth the stubborn strands.
  4. Repeat this procedure for 3-4 days in a row. Brightening hair color with lemon juice is a process that takes many sessions to see a noticeable effect. Follow the process of spraying the mixture on your hair and leave it in the sun for 1-2 hours for four more sessions.
    • You can dye it for a few days in a row or spread it out for about a week - depending on what is convenient.
    • Carefully treat your hair after each hair treatment.
  5. Wait for your hair to change color slightly. After about 4 times of dyeing your hair with lemon, you may notice that your hair will be one tone brighter. If your hair is initially dark brown, after dyeing it will turn into a light brown color. Light brown will turn dark yellow, dark yellow will become lighter yellow. Red hair will have a golden sheen. Unfortunately, if your hair is initially black, you probably won't see results.
    • Lemon juice doesn't work very well with dark hair.
    • If your hair is black or very dark - beware - sometimes lemon juice causes the dark hair color to turn a brass (slightly orange) color. You need to monitor your hair color after each dyeing session.
  6. Wait a few weeks for your hair to recover. Lemon juice will gradually damage the hair. Despite being natural, some people claim that lemon juice is just as harmful as bleach. After 3-4 consecutive dyeing attempts, take a period of several weeks for your hair to rest. The lightening effect will be quite mild, but it's permanent, so it should be done in stages.
    • You can continue to lighten your hair with lemon juice after you've given your hair a few weeks' rest, just remember to use a deep conditioner after each dyeing session.

Part 3 of 3: Add Hair Color Brighteners

  1. Add chamomile tea to the lemon juice mixture. Boil 1 cup of water.Add 2 bags of chamomile tea and steep for 10 minutes. Take out the tea bags, pour the tea and lemon juice mixture into a spray bottle. Spray this mixture on your hair just like before.
    • Chamomile tea works best for light brown or blond hair.
  2. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Cinnamon is a natural brightener and can increase the effectiveness of lemon juice. Mix a fresh batch of lemon juice and add about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to the spray bottle. Shake well and spray on hair as usual.
  3. Add a few drops of honey. Honey is a natural color lightener and also helps condition the hair. After mixing the mixture and pouring it into the spray bottle, add a little honey. Replace the nozzle and shake well. Use the mixture as usual. advertisement

Advice

  • If you only soak the lemon juice on the natural highlights, you will have highlight streaks. If you soak the mixture all over your head, your entire hair will be brighter.
  • Continue the process for several days if you don't have much time to wait the first time.
  • Do not use bottled lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice is not natural and is not as effective as lemon juice.
  • Children and teens need adult help.
  • Please be patient! You need to do it many times to see a noticeable difference.
