This article shows you how to delete an Outlook email account (formerly Hotmail). You won't be able to use the Outlook mobile app to delete your account.

Steps

1. 

   Access page to close an Outlook account. If you're signed in to Outlook, this step will lead you to the password entry page.
   • If you aren't logged into Outlook, enter your email address and password first.

   Enter password. This step is to verify identity; you will enter this information in the box provided.
   • If you are not logged in to access the account closing page, you need to enter the last four digits of your phone number in the box near the bottom of the page, click Send Code (Send code), then enter the code sent to your phone number in the box provided.

   Click Sign in (Log in). If you used your code to verify your account, you'll skip this step.

   Click next (Next). The button is at the bottom of the page. The information listed on this page describes the ramifications of the account deletion step, so you should read it carefully before proceeding.

   Click each box on the left side of the page. This step will confirm that you have read and accepted all of the account deletion rules.

6. 

   Click the cell Select a reason (Choose reason). The box is near the bottom of the page.

7. 

   Click the reason for closing the account. You will need to do this step before deleting your account.
   • If you don't have a specific reason for deleting your account, just click My reason is listed (My reason is not listed here).

8. 

   Click Mark Account for Closure (Delete the account). This is a blue button at the bottom of the page. Clicking this option will delete your account.
   • If you change your mind, just sign in to your Outlook account again at any time within 60 days.

Advice

• Create a new email account at any website service before deleting your Hotmail account. Most email providers have services to import current contact information and other data from the previous email provider.

Warning

• After the 60-day period, your account will no longer be able to be restored.
