The truth is there is no way to retrieve deleted Facebook messages or chats - after deleting a message, that content will no longer show up in the chat on your side. While retrieving data via Facebook is not feasible, this article will guide you on how to find copies of Facebook messages elsewhere, as well as how to avoid losing messages in the future.

Method 1 of 3: Find elsewhere

- Click the card Notifications (Notification).
- Click to expand section Email.
- Find that the box "All notifications, except the ones you unsubscribe from" in the "WHAT YOU'LL RECEIVE" section has been typed. sign yet. If not, your messages have not been backed up to an email address.

Click Settings (Settings) in selection list.
Click the card General (General) on the left side of the page.
Click on the link Download your information (Upload your info) below the General settings page.
Click on the link Deselect All (Deselect all) in the bottom-right corner of the page. This will deselect all cells on the currently displayed page.
Scroll down the screen and check the "Messages" box in the center of the page. Just tick the "Messages" box to make sure you don't download unnecessary data.
Drag up the top of the screen and click the button Create File (Create file) on the right side of the page asks Facebook to create a backup file.
Open the inbox of the email address you use to log into Facebook.
Wait for email from Facebook. Facebook may finish preparing your download within 10 minutes, but this will vary depending on the number of conversations in your Messenger inbox.
Open the downloaded email. After you receive the email, click to open "Your Facebook download is ready" (Facebook download data is ready).
- If you use Gmail with multiple tags, you'll see this email in the card Social (Society).
- Remember to check the directory Spam (Spam or Junk) if you do not receive email from Facebook within 10 minutes.
Click on the link Download Your Information (Download your information) in the body of the email. This will take you to the download page on Facebook.
Click the button Download (Download) to the right of the file is near the center of the page.
Enter password. Enter the password you use to log into Facebook when prompted.
Click the button Submit (Enter) in blue below the displayed window. This will begin downloading the ZIP folder containing the messages to your computer.
- The download time will vary depending on the size of the archived message.
Extract the downloaded ZIP folder. Double-click to open the ZIP folder, then select Extract (Extract) at the top of the window, click Extract all (Full unzip) on the toolbar and click Extract when requested. After the extraction is complete, a regular (unzipped) version of the folder will open.
- On a Mac, simply double-click the ZIP folder to unzip and open the unzipped folder.
See Facebook chats. Double-click the folder messages (message), open the folder with the name of another Facebook user joined the conversation you want to view, and double-click the HTML file of the chat. This will open the file using your computer's browser, allowing you to drag and view messages at will. advertisement
Advice
- It's best to get in the habit of backing up your Facebook data (including messages) after a certain amount of time (like every month).
Warning
- Deleted Facebook messages cannot be retrieved without a request from a court, and even when so, messages are stored on Facebook's servers for only 90 days.
