This article will show you how to set up a second monitor for a Windows or Mac computer. The use of two monitors will double the display space for your desktop.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: Check support on second screen

1.

   Click Displays (Screen). You should see your computer's desktop icon in the upper left corner of the System Preferences window.

   Click the card Arrangement (Sort). This option is displayed at the top of the page.

   Uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays". If you want to extend your monitor to a second monitor, make sure the "Mirror Displays" box is unchecked.
   • If you want both monitors to display the same content, you can leave the checkmark in the "Mirror Displays" box.

   Change default screen. If you want the second monitor to be the home screen, click and drag the white rectangle above one of the blue screens onto the second monitor. advertisement

Advice

• Repeat the connecting process for more monitors if supported by your computer. In this case, you can use three or more monitors.

Warning

• If the second monitor has a higher resolution than the main monitor (or vice versa), you will have to reset the settings for the higher resolution monitor to be the same as the one with the lower resolution. A graphical error will appear if you skip this step.
