Anyone who wears make-up often has to complain once in a while because the foundation cream gets dirty on the beautiful shirt. But the next time this happens, don't despair - most foundation stains on fabric can be cleaned with the right detergent and a little patience. With an oil-free foundation, a little shaving cream should solve the problem. Oil-based foundation creams can be treated with dishwashing liquid or regular detergent. And if the garment has foundation on it, you can clean it with a little liquid soap and a damp sponge.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Clean oil-free liquid foundation stains

  1. Cover the stain with shaving cream. All shaving creams are effective for this purpose. Remember to use cream products instead of gel products. Spray the cream directly onto the stain.

  2. Let the shaving cream sit for 2-3 minutes. Wait a moment for the cream to do its magic. You just need to wait a few minutes.
  3. Rub shaving cream over the stain. After waiting a few minutes for the cream to soak, rub it into the stain. Use your fingers or a clean, soft cloth to scrub. Rub your hands vigorously to make sure the cream is absorbed into the dirty fabrics.

  4. Use more rubbing alcohol for stubborn stains. If shaving cream and water alone aren't enough to treat the stain, you can try mixing a little rubbing alcohol with the cream. Use a mixture of shaving cream and rubbing alcohol to scrub the stain, then rinse with water.
    • If you are afraid that alcohol will damage your clothes, try a little alcohol on the dark corner of the item.

  5. Rinse off the stain with cold water. Carefully rinse off all the shaving cream from the fabric. Use cold water the first time you rinse, as hot water can cause stains to stick to the fabric. Check to see if there is any remaining cream.
  6. Repeat the process again and wash with warm water if necessary. If the cream persists after the first treatment, spray a little more shaving cream and try again. This time, rinse with warm or hot water.
    • Warm water can help the shaving cream break down stubborn cosmetic stains that have stuck to fabric.
  7. Use a clean, dry cloth to absorb the treated fabric. After you remove the stain, gently pat the fabric dry. Use a blotting motion to remove water and any remaining dirt.
  8. Wash the item when the stain has been removed. After you have treated the stain in place, you need to remove any remaining traces of cosmetics (and shaving cream) by washing clothes. If the item cannot be washed in a washing machine, you can wash it by hand or take it to a dry cleaner. advertisement

Method 2 of 3: Clean oil-based liquid foundation stains

  1. Use water to dampen the stain. Wet the stain with a little cool water. Water will help the solvent to spread and decompose the stain. Do not soak the stain with water, only moisten it. You may need a water spray on delicate fabrics.
  2. Pour a few drops of dish soap onto the stain. Pour a little dish soap directly onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Do not use dishwasher detergent specifically intended for dishwashers, as these are stronger than hand dishwashers. Dishwashing liquid has been specially formulated to dislodge grease but is also gentle, so it's a good choice for oil-based cosmetic stains.
  3. Use your finger or damp cloth to apply soap to the stain. Gently rub soap into the stain to dissolve the oils in the cosmetics. You can also use a soft toothbrush to scrub the fabric, or use the back of the spoon to rub the soap on delicate fabrics.
  4. Use a clean towel to blot the affected area. To remove stains, use a clean cloth or paper towel to press on the treated area, then remove the towel. Do not rub or wipe the stain, as this may cause it to spread around.
  5. Use cool water to scrub the stain to clean the soap. After using a towel to remove the stain, gently rub the stain with your hand to remove any remaining soap and cosmetics stains. If stain is still present, blot it with a towel and repeat the procedure again. You may have to do this many times to completely remove the stain.
  6. Pre-treat stains with laundry soap. You can also use regular laundry detergent to pre-treat cosmetic stains, but check the instructions on the clothes and on the soap packaging to make sure the fabric is safe. With delicate fabrics, you need to use special soap to hand wash for easily damaged items.
    • If you are concerned that soap could damage the fabric, try first on a hidden corner of the item.
  7. Wash the item as usual. After you've treated the stain with soap, wash it to remove any remaining cosmetic and soap stains on the fabric. Follow the cleaning instructions on the clothing label to avoid damage. advertisement

Method 3 of 3: Clean the foundation

  1. Blow out the chalk. The foundation stains on the fabric are relatively easy to clean but also easily adhere to the fabric! Do not try to brush or scrub the stain. The safest way to remove chalk from fabric is by mouth blowing or with a low-temperature hair dryer.
    • With small chalk stains, you only need to blow a breath to remove the cosmetic stain. If the powder has been rubbed into the fabric, you may need to wash it off.
  2. Put a few drops of dish soap on the stain. For foundation, a little mild detergent or hand soap is enough to clean. Apply a drop or two of soap directly to the stain.
    • If you are afraid that soap will damage the fabric, you can try on a dark spot first.
  3. Wipe the stain with a sponge or damp cloth. Soak a cloth or sponge, then wring it out. Rub lightly on the stain to rub the soap and remove the chalk. Rinse off the towel or sponge and repeat to clean the soap.
  4. Blot with a clean, dry cloth to absorb some of the water. After treating the stain, gently pat the wet area with a dry cloth. Be careful not to rub the fabric, as this could damage the fabric or cause residual cosmetics to adhere to the fabric.
  5. Wash clothes as usual. After you've treated the stain, wash the item as usual. Note the instructions on the label to avoid damaging the clothes. advertisement

Advice

  • If liquid foundation falls on clothing, use the edge of a blunt spoon or blade to scrape off the cream, then use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot the stain (but don't wipe it off). Once the initial treatment is finished, you can continue cleaning the stain.
  • If you need to put on the garment immediately after removing the stain that cannot be washed and dried first, use a clean towel to blot the wet area, then use a hair dryer to dry.
  • With delicate fabrics that are susceptible to water stains, you can lightly pat them with a damp cloth by dabbing up and down around the edge of the water stain, avoiding the area between the stain.

Warning

  • Don't try to remove stains from your clothes with an oil-based makeup remover, as you will have to deal with the oil stains in addition to the makeup!
