Steps

Method 1 of 3: Windows 8 operating system

   While the computer is restarting, press and hold the "F8" key. The "Advanced Boot Options" screen will appear.

Method 3 of 3: Mac OS X operating system

1. 

   Start the computer.

2. 

   When you hear the sound of the machine booting, immediately hold down the "Shift" key.

3. 

   Quickly release the "Shift" key after the screen shows the gray Apple icon and the rotating gear icon. Your Mac will now boot into Safe Mode. advertisement

Advice

• If you cannot use the arrow keys on the keyboard during the "Safe Mode" boot process, press the "NUM LOCK" key on your keyboard and try again.
• If you want to exit Safe Mode, click restart and let the machine start up as usual.
• During the startup, if the computer cannot enter Safe Mode, reboot the computer, then follow the instructions above again until the computer enters Safe Mode. Sometimes the computer cannot enter Safe Mode because you have not pressed the "Shift" or "F8" key in time.
• If you cannot enter Safe Mode on Mac OS X because the keyboard is not working, start the computer remotely using another computer in the same system as yours, then enter the command " sudo nvram boot-args = "- x" into the Mac terminal and the computer should enter Safe Mode.
• If your computer uses two different operating systems, when you boot to enter Safe Mode you will be given the right to select the operating system you want from the drop-down list.
