Content

This wikiHow teaches you how to rename your character in the game on Minecraft desktop. Unfortunately you cannot change your username on Minecraft PE or console, as these versions use the Xbox Live or PlayStation gamertag.

Steps

  1. Understand the limitations. We can't rename it if you've just created an account within the past 30 days, nor can it be renamed more than once every 30 days. You must also use a name that no one chose at the time. Character names must be longer than 2 characters and can only use underscores, letters and numbers.
    • Changing the username in the game does not affect the Minecraft website profile name.

  2. Open the Mojang website. Go to https://www.mojang.com/ using your web browser.
  3. Click ACCOUNT (Account). This tab is in the upper-right side of the page.

  4. Click Log in (Login) in the top right of the page.
    • If you're already signed in, skip this step and two more.
  5. Enter your login information. Enter your email address and password in the respective fields on the page.

  6. Click the button Log in green near the bottom of the page.
  7. Look for the "Profile Name" section near the center of the page.
  8. Click Change (Change). This link is to the right of your current username.
  9. Enter a new profile name. Enter the username you want to use in the text field near the top of the page.
  10. Click Check availability (Check availability). This gray button is to the right of the profile name field. The username you choose will be checked for matches; otherwise, a green "username is available" message will appear on the screen.
    • If a username is already in use, a red "username is in use" message will appear. Once there, try choosing a different name or spell your name a little differently, then click Check availability Again.
  11. Enter password. In the "Password" text field near the bottom of the page, enter the password you use to sign in to your Minecraft account.
  12. Click Change name (Change name). This button is at the bottom of the page. Your current username will be changed to the new one shortly; The change will be applied the next time you sign into Minecraft on a Windows or Mac computer.
    • Once the name has been changed successfully, it cannot be changed for the next 30 days.
    • The old username remains available for 7 days, meaning you will have one week to change from the new username back to the old one if you change your mind.

Advice

  • If you change the gamertag, the Minecraft PE version or the console will reflect the change. Note: you can only redeem your gamertag a few times and need payment to do it.
  • The renaming has no effect on whitelist / OP status.

Warning

  • Changing your username does not help you avoid being banned from the server.
