If you want to avoid being attacked by other users targeting an IP address or just want a new identity online, then changing your IP address can be quite useful. You can change the IP address on the Mac at any time through the System Preferences menu.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Change IP address

1.

   Click the network you are using in the left bar. For example, if you are using a Wi-Fi connection, click “Wi-Fi”.

   Click the Proxies tab. This option is at the top of the window, in the same row with the tabs DNS, WINS, 802.1X, TCP / IP and Hardware.

   Click to choose a protocol below the “Select a protocol to configure heading”(Select protocol to configure).
   • Select “SOCKS Proxy” if you are unsure of the protocol to use. The "SOCKS Proxy" protocol is commonly used to route network packets between the client and the server through a proxy. This option is very effective in enhancing general security and hiding the client addresses of applications.
   • Web protocol (HTTP) and secure web protocol (HTTPS) are also widely used but less secure than SOCKS Proxy.

   Enter the IP address of the desired proxy server in the empty field.
   • If you are using a SOCKS proxy, you need to go to the SOCKS proxy list at http://sockslist.net/ to choose a category 4 or 5 IP address.

    Click OK then choose Apply. You should then connect to the specified proxy server. advertisement

Method 3 of 3: Disconnect the router / modem

1. 

   Disconnect the router (router) or the modem (modem). Sometimes routers and modems are 2 in 1 combined so we just need to disconnect one device. If the router and modem are two separate devices then you can unplug both to reset the IP address.
   • Wait a few seconds until a few minutes. Most home networks use dynamic IP addresses. This means your network service provider will assign you a new IP address every time the router or modem reconnects to the network.

   Reconnect the router. Wait for the router to reconnect to the network.

3. 

   Check for a new IP address. You can see it in the "Network" section of "System Preferences."
   • If that still doesn't work, unplug the modem again and try again after a few hours.

Advice

• If you want to block or hide your IP address, you might consider using a proxy server instead of changing the IP address. Note: Using a proxy server can slow your Internet connection, but this keeps you anonymous without changing your IP address.
