This wikiHow teaches you how to send text messages using WhatsApp on both iPhone and Android. As long as the recipient has the WhatsApp app and is connected to Wi-Fi, they will be able to receive and respond to your messages from anywhere in the world.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: On an iPhone

1. 

   Open WhatsApp. Tap the green WhatsApp app icon with a white phone and dialogue bubble.
   • Open the App Store app store on your iPhone to download WhatsApp if you haven't already.

   Click Chats. Select dialogue bubble at the bottom of the screen. The Chats page where you can view your current chats opens.
   • If WhatsApp opens a conversation, tap the mark < in the upper left corner of the screen to return to the Chats page.

   Click the "New Chat" icon with a pencil and paper. Options in the upper right corner of the screen.
   • You can also tap an existing chat to open it. If you choose this option, skip to the next step.

   Tap a contact's name. The chat box with that contact will open.
   • You can also click New Group at the top of the page to create a new group, or click New Contact to add a new contact phone number.

   Compose a text message. Enter your message in the text field at the bottom of the screen.
   • You can also upload photos by tapping the camera icon and selecting a photo from gallery on iPhone.

   Click the "Send" arrow with a blue paper plane to the right of the text field. Your message will be sent. advertisement

Method 2 of 2: On Android

1. 

   Open WhatsApp. Tap the green WhatsApp app icon with a white phone and dialogue bubble.
   • Open the Google Play Store on Android to download WhatsApp if you haven't already.

   Click CHATS. This tab is at the top of the screen. The Chats page will open.
   • If WhatsApp opens up a conversation, tap "Back" in the top left corner of the screen to return to the Chats page.

   Click the "New Chat" dialogue bubble to the left of the icon ⋮ near the top right corner of the screen.
   • On some Android tablets and smartphones, the "New Chat" icon will be in the lower right corner of the screen.
   • You can also tap an existing chat to open it. If you choose this option, skip to the next step.

   Choose a contact. Tap the contact's name to start a new conversation with that person.
   • You can also click New group near the top of the page to start a new group chat, or select the person shadow icon near the top right corner of the screen to add a new contact.

5. 

   Compose a text message. Enter your message in the text field at the bottom of the screen.
   • You can also add a photo by tapping the camera icon to the right of the text field and then selecting a photo from the gallery on your Android device.

6. 

   Click the "Send" arrow with a white paper plane shape on a green background. Your message will be sent to the other party. advertisement

Advice

• After sending the message, you will see a checkmark appear below. Another check mark will appear after the message has been sent to the recipient's device and both will turn blue when that person reads the message.

Warning

• Sending and receiving WhatsApp messages using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi can cause your phone money to spike.
