This wiki page will show you how to change the language that Alexa recognizes and dialogue on Alexa-enabled devices.Currently, the supported languages are German, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese and Japanese (and other languages to be added soon), however. not merely supplemented with translation tools. From the beginning, Alexa will be designed exclusively for each language, so native speakers will experience it easily. Some features, such as Voice Purchasing, will not work if a language other than the region where you currently live is selected.
Steps
Open the Alexa app. It's a light blue app that looks like a speech bubble with a white border.
- If you don't have the app installed, you can download the Alexa app on your Android phone from the Google Play Store or on your iPhone via the App Store and sign in with the email address and password to your Amazon account.
Click the gear icon. This icon is in the lower right corner. This is the settings menu.
Tap the device you want to change. If you haven't given a custom name to your device, it will have something like Echo or Echo Dot.
Scroll down and tap Language (Language). The current language will be displayed.
Click the drop-down menu to select another language. Choosing a different English speaking region will cause Alexa to start speaking with that area's dialect. Alexa does not currently support Vietnamese, but you can choose from the following languages:
- Deutsch (German) (German)
- English (United States) (American English)
- English (Canada) (Canadian English)
- English (India) (Indian English)
- English (Australia) (Australian English)
- English (United Kingdom) (English English)
- 日本語 (Japanese) (Japanese)
- Español (España) (España)
- Español (Mexico) (España Mexico)
- Français (France) (French)
- Français (Canada) (French Canada)
- Italiano (Italy) (Italian)
Press Save Changes (Save changes). There will be a warning describing how Alexa might behave differently if you choose a different language.
Press Yes, Change (Yes, Change) to confirm. Now the language of Alexa has been changed.
- You can always change the language of Alexa back by following the steps above.
Advice
- While the actual language will not change, selecting an area that uses a language other than regular English will help Alexa recognize your voice better if you speak that particular dialect.
- If you are studying German or Japanese, give it a try, this might be a good way to practice too. At first, try simple commands like asking about time or the weather.
