Most laptops made in the past five years are equipped with Wi-Fi. If you have an older model or just want to make sure your laptop has a WiFi card, it just takes a few clicks of the mouse to find out.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Check your laptop model

  1. Look at the bottom of your laptop and find the model number. Your laptop has a model number at the bottom - a series of numbers and letters. Copy these onto a piece of paper.
    • If you can't find the model number on the bottom of your laptop, check the battery compartment. It can be inside.
  2. Search online for the model. Enter the model number of your laptop into a search engine, and you can easily find the specifications of your laptop. This will give you all kinds of detailed information, including whether your laptop has a Wi-Fi card or not.
    • If your laptop has been modified since it was manufactured, or you bought it second-hand and you're not sure, you may want to use alternative methods.

Method 2 of 4: In Windows 7 or below

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu. The Start menu is located at the bottom left of the computer screen. Click the Start button to open the menu and then click "Control Panel".
  2. Find Device Manager in System and Security. When the Control Panel opens, look for the icon that says "System and Security". Click the icon and then select "System". In the System folder you will see Device Manager. Click on it to open it.
    • You may be asked to enter an administrator password or confirmation when opening Device Manager.
  3. Click on "Network adapters.Device Manager shows you all the devices installed on your computer. Open "Network Adapters" for a list of all bluetooth, ethernet, or wifi adapters.
  4. Find your WiFi card. A Wi-Fi card can have different names, so you'll have to go through the list and look for something with "wireless," "802.11," or "Wi-Fi" in the name.
    • If you don't see anything with "wireless" or "wifi" in the name, then you don't have a wireless card.

Method 3 of 4: In Windows 8 or higher

  1. Open the sidebar at the top right of your screen. Move your mouse to the top right corner of the screen and swipe down. A sidebar will appear.
  2. Click on "Settings". You can find "Settings" at the bottom of the menu. Click to open the folder.
  3. Look at the first of the six icons that appear. A new interface appears when you click on "Settings", with six icons at the bottom and five clickable tabs. The first of the six icons should look like five bars, starting small and growing in size. When you see this icon, you have a Wi-Fi card in your laptop.

Method 4 of 4: On a Mac with OSX Yosemite

  1. Open "About This Mac". Move your mouse to the Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen. Click to open a drop-down menu and select "About This Mac" from the options.
  2. Click on "System Report". There are several tabs at the top of the "About This Mac" window. Go to the "Overview" tab. Locate the button that says "System Report" and click it to open it.
  3. Open "Network" to view your WiFi information. Scroll down the left panel until you find the "Network" header and click to expand it. Click on "WiFi".
  4. Find the card's data under "Interfaces". If you have a WiFi card, it will appear here. It will say "Card Type" and then the name of your card, such as "AirPort Extreme" (yours may be renamed).
    • If you don't have a card, you may also see the error "Wi-Fi: no hardware installed" in the top right corner of the screen, along with the date and day.

Tips

  • In the Device Manager window you can view all the hardware built into your computer.

Warnings

  • You should never remove a device unless you know what you are doing. The piece of hardware may not work without the correct files on your computer.
