While there's no way to import your contacts into YouTube, with some tinkering, you can still find your friends' channels. If one of your friends created their YouTube channels for the summer of 2015, you can probably find their profile linked to their profile on Google+. If your friend uses his or her full name for this YouTube profile, you can search using YouTube's built-in search. Some users of the YouTube mobile app can add friends as contacts, thanks to a new feature (still in the starting blocks) called Shared Videos.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Search YouTube

  1. Type your friend's name in the YouTube search bar. If your friend uses his or her real name for his or her YouTube account, you can use the search function to find that person. This can be done on the website as well as in the YouTube mobile app.
    • You can also type in your friend's YouTube username if you know them.
    • To search in the mobile app, press the magnifying glass icon to bring up a search bar.
  2. Tap or click the Search icon. This icon resembles a magnifying glass. Once the search is complete, a list of results will appear on the screen.
  3. Filter the search results to show only channels. On YouTube, your friend's homepage is referred to as a channel. If your friend has uploaded content, commented, or created a playlist, they have a channel. Click "Filter" at the top of the search results and select "Channel" under "Type".
    • In the app you have to click on the icon at the top right (three horizontal lines with vertical lines through them). Then select "Channels" from the "Content Type" drop-down menu.
  4. Find your friend's channel. If your friend has a common name, multiple channels may be displayed in the search results. Search each channel by clicking the profile picture next to its name.
  5. Subscribe to your friend's channel. Once you have found your friend, you can subscribe to his channel by clicking or pressing the red "Subscribe" button. This button appears at the top of the user's channel.

Method 2 of 3: With profiles on Google+

  1. Visit Google+ in an internet browser. While there is no way to import your contacts into YouTube, it is often possible to find your friends by viewing their profiles on Google+. If your friend's YouTube account was created before the summer of 2015, there is likely a link on their profile on Google+.
    • You need a Gmail account to use this method.
  2. Sign in with your Google account information. Click "Sign in" in the top right corner of the screen and enter your login information.
    • If you are already signed in, you will see your Google profile image in the top right corner of Google+.
  3. Click the "Start" drop-down menu. A menu will appear.
  4. Select "People". Now you will be presented with a list of suggested contacts along with a menu on the left side of the screen.
  5. Select "Gmail Contacts" from the left menu. If you have contacts in Gmail, you can find their profiles from Google+ here. A list of your contacts from Gmail will appear with links leading to their profiles on Google+.
    • If you've ever used Google+, you can also try clicking "Got in circles" at the top of the page. Both options will display a list of user profiles.
    • If you are looking for a specific friend, you can enter their name in the search bar at the top of the page. It may help to include the city where your friend lives, such as "Michael Jackson, Santa Maria."
  6. Click on a friend's name to view their profile. The profile has a big header at the top and your friend's photo is on the left.
  7. Click "YouTube" in the menu bar just below the heading. If this person has posted public videos to YouTube, they will appear below the heading. Know that "[friend's name]" s YouTube videos "will be next to the red YouTube symbol just below the header.
    • If you don't see a YouTube link below this image, then you won't be able to find this person's YouTube channel using this method.
  8. Click "YouTube Channel" under "[friend's name]" s YouTube videos ". Your friend's YouTube page will appear on the screen.
  9. Click "Subscribe" to follow your friend's channel. The button is red and appears in the top right corner of the page.

Method 3 of 3: With shared videos on YouTube

  1. Open the YouTube app on your mobile device. YouTube has a new feature called "Shared Videos" that allows mobile app users to share videos and chat with YouTube contacts. Android Police reports that this feature is not yet available to all users, but rather appears "spontaneously" in the app.
  2. Tap the Share icon. If you see an icon that resembles a speech bubble with an arrow pointing to the right, you can use this method.
  3. Press "Contacts". You must add your friend as a YouTube contact before you can chat with (and send videos to) that friend on YouTube.
  4. Search the "Maybe Know You" section. This list of YouTube users consists of your contacts on Google and other people with whom you communicate online.
  5. Tap the Invite icon to invite a friend. The icon is a plus sign next to the silhouette of a head. It appears below the contact's name.
    • This person will have to approve your contact request before you can share. They can only approve your invitation if they also have the YouTube app installed on their device.
    • The invitation expires after 72 hours.
  6. Press "+ Add more contacts" to find other friends. If the person you're sharing with isn't on the "Maybe Know You" list, create an invitation that can be shared with everyone. When the url appears, click on "Send invitation" and then choose an app to share the link with.
  7. View your contact's channels. Once you have added contacts (and they have approved your invitations), you can view their YouTube channels by going to the Shared tab and then selecting "Contacts".
    • To share a video with your contacts, press the "Share" link under the YouTube video of your choice and then select one of your YouTube contacts.

Tips

  • To manage your subscriptions on YouTube, click the "Subscriptions" link on the YouTube home page or the Subscriptions icon (a folder with a "play" symbol) in the mobile app.
  • If you are harassed by a YouTube user, you can block that person. Open their channel in an internet browser and click "About". Then click on the flag icon at the top right of their channel description and select "Block User".
