This wikiHow teaches you how to get your Android phone or tablet out of safe mode. An Android phone or tablet enters safe mode when the operating system detects a serious error or when one or more third-party apps is interfering with your phone's operation. You can usually turn off safe mode by restarting your Android phone or uninstalling a damaged app.

Method 1 of 2: Restart your Android phone

1. Make sure safe mode is enabled on your Android phone. If you see the text "Safe mode" in the lower left corner of the screen, then safe mode is enabled on your Android phone.
   • If you don't see this text, safe mode is not enabled. You can still try rebooting your Android phone if it is slow or if you are unable to use some functions.
2. Try to use the notifications on your phone. In some cases, you can turn off safe mode by tapping the message that safe mode is turned on in your notifications:
   • Unlock your phone.
   • Swipe down from the top of your screen.
   • Tap the "Safe mode is on" notification if you see it.
     • If you don't see this message, go to the next step.
   • Tap on RESTART or RESTART NOW when requested.
3. Press and hold the power button on your phone. The power button is usually located on the right side of the case on an Android phone.
4. Tap on Switch off when requested. When you do this, your phone will turn itself off.
   • You may have to go on again Switch off to confirm this action.
5. Wait until your Android phone is completely turned off. This will take a few minutes.
6. Turn your phone back on. Press and hold the power button until you see the boot screen. Then release the button.
7. Wait for your Android phone to finish booting. When your phone has restarted, safe mode should be off.
   • If safe mode is still on, turn your phone off one more time and take the battery out for a few minutes before restarting your phone.

Method 2 of 2: Delete a damaged app

1. Make sure you know which app is causing problems. A damaged or malicious app is the most common reason for Android phones and tablets to switch to safe mode. If your Android phone never switched to safe mode until you installed a particular app, then that app is most likely the cause.
   • You may have to try several things to find out which app is causing you problems, so start with any apps that start up immediately when your phone boots (such as widgets on the home screen).
   • You can check if the app you are uninstalling is causing problems by searching the internet for it to see if other users are having the same problem.
2. Open the Settings of your Android phone. Tap the Settings app icon in the app drawer.
   • You can also swipe down from the top of the screen to open your notifications and then tap there SettingsScroll down and tap Apps. This can be found in the middle of the Settings page.
     • On some Android phones, you tap instead Apps and notifications.
   • Select the app. Tap the app you want to delete. The page of the app opens.
     • You may have to scroll down to find the app.
     • On some Android phones you have to App info before you can continue.
   • Tap on REMOVE. This is almost at the top of the page.
     • If the app is a system app, tap SWITCH OFF.
   • Tap on REMOVE when requested. The app will then be removed from your phone.
     • Tap again SWITCH OFF if the app is a system app.
   • Restart your phone. When your phone has restarted, safe mode should be off.

Tips

• If you are unable to exit safe mode by restarting your phone and / or uninstalling an app, you may need to perform a hard reset.

Warnings

• Safe mode is how your phone's operating system responds to an error or malware. If your phone switches to safe mode on a regular basis, don't ignore it.
