This article will show you how to log out of WhatsApp on a computer, Android or iOS device. Although the mobile app does not have a logout button, you can do the same by deleting the app data (Android) or deleting the app itself (iPhone and iPad).

To step

Method 1 of 3: Android

  1. Open WhatsApp. It's the app with the green speech bubble, found on the home screen or in the app drawer.
  2. Back up your data. Since WhatsApp does not have a built-in logout button, you will have to log out by deleting the app data from your device. Back up your conversations to your Google account to make sure you don't lose them. You do this like this:
    • Tap ⋮ in the top right corner of your screen.
    • Tap on Settings at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
    • Tap on Chats.
    • Tap on Chat backup.
    • Tap on Make a backup.
  3. Click on the Start button. This is the round button at the bottom center of the screen. You will now go back to the home screen.
  4. Open the Settings of your Android. This is the app with the gray gear icon on the home screen or in the app drawer.
  5. Scroll down and tap Apps. You can find this under the heading "Device".
  6. Scroll down and tap on WhatsApp. The apps are in alphabetical order, so you may have to scroll far down.
  7. Tap Storage. If you don't see a save option but just a button with "Clear data", just skip to the next step.
  8. Tap Clear data. When you get a confirmation message asking if you want to delete the data and files, tap "OK". If you don't get this message, just skip to the next step.
  9. Open WhatsApp. It opens with the login screen, letting you know that you are logged out.
    • If you want to log in again, open WhatsApp and enter your username and password. You can then tap To recover to restore the backup you made.

Method 2 of 3: iPhone and iPad

  1. Open WhatsApp. It's the app with the green speech bubble on the home screen.
  2. Back up your conversations. Since WhatsApp does not have a built-in logout button, you will have to delete the app to log out. Back up your conversations to iCloud to make sure you don't lose any messages. You do this like this:
    • Tap on Settings in the lower right corner of the screen.
    • Tap on Chats.
    • Tap on Backup.
    • Tap on Back up now.
  3. Tap the home button. This is the large circle in the bottom center of your device. You will now go back to the home screen.
  4. Tap and hold the WhatsApp icon. You can let go when the icons start to wobble.
  5. Tap the X on the WhatsApp icon. A pop-up will now appear.
  6. Tap Delete. The app will now be removed from your device.
  7. Download WhatsApp if you want to log in again. You can do this by searching for "WhatsAap" in the Apple App Store and tapping the cloud icon when it appears in the search results. When you log back in you will be asked to click To recover to restore your call data.
