This wikiHow teaches you how to download and install the Tor browser on your Linux computer.

Part 1 of 2: Downloading the Tor package

1. Open the Tor website. Go to https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html in your web browser. You can download Tor's setup file from this link.
2. Click on the tab Download. You can find this in the top right corner of the page. You will be redirected to Tor's download page.
3. click on DOWNLOAD. This purple button can be found on the far left of the page.
   • Below this button it should read "Linux 64-bit". If you see the name of another operating system (eg "Windows"), click on the Linux-link to the right of the button.
   • When asked what to do with the setup file, make sure to select the "Save", "Save" or "Download" option before continuing.
4. Wait for the setup file to download. This shouldn't take more than a few seconds.
5. Write down the name of the setup file. You will see the name of the setup file somewhere in the window; you will need to know the language and version of the Tor setup file in order to install it.
   • For example: downloading the version U.S. English of Tor gives the file name "tor-browser-linux64-7.5.2_en-US.tar.xz" for the most recent 64-bit version of Tor.
   • If you can't find the file name, you can check it in the Downloads folder on your computer.

Part 2 of 2: Installing Tor

1. Open the Go to the Downloads directory. Type cd Downloads and press ↵ Enter. This shifts the focus from the Terminal to the Downloads folder, where the downloaded Tor setup file should be.
   • If the downloaded Tor setup file is in a different folder, you will need to specify the directory of that folder.
2. Extract the contents of the Tor setup file. Type tar -xvJf tor-browser-linux64-7.5.2_regional language.tar.xz and make sure you include the language in the file name (eg. en-US) in the part regional language changes, after which you press ↵ Enter presses.
   • For example: to use the version U.S. English from Tor, type tar -xvJf tor-browser-linux64-7.5.2_en-US.tar.xz and press ↵ Enter.
3. Open the directory of the Tor browser. Type cd tor-browser_language where you language changes to the language abbreviation of your selected version of Tor, and press ↵ Enter.
4. Run the Tor setup. Type ./start-tor-browser.desktop and press ↵ Enter. Then wait for the Tor setup window to open.
5. click on Connect. This option can be found in the lower left corner of the window. This will connect you to the Tor network and, when the connection is successfully established, open the Tor browser. You should now be able to browse with Tor.

Tips

• Contrary to popular belief, Tor in itself is not dangerous or illegal - in fact, it is based on an older version of Firefox.
• While most apps can be installed with the command sudo apt-get install program-name>, Tor is a portable browser that can be placed anywhere. This means that its files have a flexibility that is not possible in a traditional setup file.

Warnings

• Tor is often used to access the Dark Web, an area of ​​the Internet that is not indexed by normal search engines. Avoid using Tor for such purposes as it is generally unsafe and may be illegal in your country.
• When using Tor, there are a few things to consider:
  • Tor does not anonymize all internet traffic when it is first installed. The only traffic that Tor anonymizes is Firefox traffic. Other applications must be configured separately with proxies before they can use the Tor network.
  • The Tor button in Firefox blocks technologies that could potentially reveal your identity. These are: Java, ActiveX, RealPlayer, QuickTime and Adobe plug-in. To use Tor with these applications, the settings file must be configured differently.
  • Cookies that were present before Tor was installed can still reveal the user's identity. To ensure that the user is completely anonymous, you should delete all cookies before installing Tor.
  • The Tor network encrypts all data up to the network exit router. To fully protect your data, the user should use HTTPS or another reliable encryption.
• Always make sure to check the integrity of the applications you download from Tor. Applications can be a problem if a Tor router is hacked.
