Bean sprouts are widely used in Asian cuisine. It is crunchy, has a light nutty flavor and can be added to all kinds of dishes. Bean sprouts are grown by sprouting mung beans. Mung beans germinate very quickly, and the bean sprouts can often be eaten after a few days.

To step

  1. Rinse the beans. Rinse the mung beans well until the water runs clear. This will ensure that you get rid of any residual toxins or heavy metals. You can also rinse away any bugs!
    • The mung beans get a lot bigger when they sprout, so be careful not to make too much.
  2. Place the beans in a transparent bowl. Use a clean transparent bowl. If you have a special germinating tray, you can use that too.
  3. Add the water. Make sure the beans are completely submerged. The total volume is now 2 to 3 times as large.
  4. Let them soak for 6-12 hours. After 6-12 hours (usually about 8 hours), the beans will swell. How long the beans have to soak depends on the beans and the temperature.
  5. Drain and rinse the beans. Drain the beans well, rinse with cold water and drain again.
  6. Put the beans in a jar. Place the soaked beans in a large pot or germinating container and cover with cheesecloth (not with the lid of the pot!). You can also use a special germ bag.
  7. Place the pot in a cool, dry, dark place. Provide a place with little to no sunlight. A good place is, for example, at the bottom of a cupboard that you don't often visit.
  8. Wait for it. You will now need to rinse and drain the beans every 12 hours for 2-5 days. Then you put them back in the dark place every time. How long you wait depends on how far you want the beans to germinate.
  9. Ready! As soon as you think the bean sprouts are the right length, it is ready to eat! Enjoy your meal!
