Superscript and subscript allows you to create characters that appear higher or lower on the line in the text than normally typed text. These characters are smaller than standard text and are mostly used for footnotes, endnotes, and math notation. You can easily switch between superscript, subscript and normal text in Microsoft Word.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Superscript

  1. Select the text you want to make superscript of. You can also place your cursor where you want to start typing superscript.
  2. Enable superscript. The selected text will be converted to superscript, or you start typing in superscript at the cursor position. There are a few different ways to enable superscript:
    • Click the x² button in the Font group of the Start menu in the ribbon.
    • Click the Format menu, select Font and then check "Superscript".
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + "=".
  3. Switch off superscript again. When you are done with superscript, you can disable it by doing the same as you did when enabling it. This will return you to regular text.
  4. Remove superscript or subscript. You can return text to normal by selecting it and pressing Ctrl + Space.

Part 2 of 2: Subscript

  1. Select the text you want to make subscript of. You can also put your cursor where you want to start typing subscripts.

    • Press Ctrl + "=".
  3. Disable subscript again. When you are done with subscript, you can disable it by doing the same as you did when enabling it.
  4. Remove superscript or subscript. You can return text to normal by selecting it and pressing Ctrl + Space.
