It can sometimes be difficult to find nice hairstyles that you can do with short hair.Fortunately, there are several ways to make space buns if you have shorter hair. Half your hair up to make space buns, or divide your hair into two sections and pin all your hair up into two space buns, securing any loose hair with bobby pins. Incorporating braids into your space buns is also a great way to secure and style all of your hair.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Make half-up spacebuns

  1. Brush and part your hair and then put your hair up. Brush out any tangles in your hair with a hairbrush or comb. With a comb, part about the center of your hair so that both buns have the same amount of hair.
  2. Make two ponytails with the top part of your hair. With your hair parted evenly, pull half of your hair from the top behind your ear to one side of the part. This is the part of the hair that you are going to make into a half updo space bun. If you have the tail, secure it with a small hair tie so it doesn't slip. Repeat the same process to make the ponytail on the other side of your part as well.
    • Optionally, use a brush to smooth your hair when holding your tail in your hand.
    • Buy small hair ties from a drugstore or department store.
  3. Twist the entire length of one ponytail with your fingers. Hold a tail in your fingers and twist it so that it starts to spin too. Keep doing this until the entire tail is twisted, all the way to the ends.
    • Make a tight twist if you want small spacebuns, or twist your tail loosely if you prefer larger spacebuns.
  4. Wrap the twisted tail in a circle to make a bun. While still holding the tail in its twist, start wrapping it around exactly where the elastic is. Use your fingers to circle the tail until it forms a bun.
    • Hold the bottom of the tail with your hand to hold the twist in place, and use the other hand to guide the braid around itself in a circle.
  5. Use bobby pins to secure the bun. Hold the bun with one hand and slide bobby pins into your hair with your other hand to secure the bun. Place the bobby pins evenly around the bun so that it does not slip, and if necessary, pin back any loose hairs protruding from the bun.
    • Push the bobby pins into the bun so that they are not visible and provide good support.
    • The more bobby pins you put in, the firmer your space buns will be.
  6. Repeat the same steps with the other ponytail to make the second bun. Twist the second tail just like you did the first. Wrap it around in a circle at the base of the elastic to make the bun, securing it with bobby pins.
    • If the second space bun doesn't look exactly like the first, try using bobby pins or loosening parts of your bun with your fingers until they look alike.
  7. Style the lower part of your hair as you wish. With the top part of your hair in two space buns, you have to choose to style the rest of your hair or just leave it as it is. Create soft curls with a curling iron or straighten your hair with a flat iron, if desired.

Method 2 of 3: Style spacebuns with all your hair

  1. Brush any tangles out of your hair and part in the middle. Since the spacebuns are made with almost all of your hair, divide your hair starting at the front and all the way back on your head. Part straight with a comb, and use a mirror to help you see the back of your head if necessary.
    • While a straight part looks best, don't worry if it's not perfect.
    • If you want, you can separate the two parts you made with large hair clips.
  2. Pin each half of your hair to the top of your head. Using the part as a guide, grab one side of your hair so that it reaches the top of your head, close to your part. Use a brush to smooth it out if needed, and secure with a hair band or elastic. Repeat the same steps on the other side of your hair so that you have two large tails.
    • Look in the mirror to see if your pigtails are even on your head. If any are skewed or uneven, try doing them again to make them symmetrical.
    • If you want space buns similar to Princess Leia's, strap them closer to your ears so that they sit on either side of your head.
  3. Tease the hair into your tail to give it more volume. Hold the tail out with one hand so you can backcomb it with the other. To backcomb your hair, comb or brush towards your scalp instead of the length of your hair. This will give it more volume and make your bun look fuller.
    • Don't tease your hair too much, as this will damage it. Use the comb to backcomb your tail in three to five strokes and see if that makes it appear fuller before backcombing it.
  4. Wrap the tail in a circle to make a bun. Use your fingers to circle the teased tail to make a bun. How tightly or loosely you wrap the bun determines how small or large it gets.
    • Wrap the bun loosely for a larger bun, or wrap it tightly for a smaller and firmer bun.
  5. Secure the bun with bobby pins or a hair tie. Hold the bun in place with one hand and use the other hand to place the bobby pins. Focus on the base of the bun and tuck the bobby pins evenly around the bun to secure it. Once the bun is tight, pin any loose strands.
    • To test if your bun is secure, insert the bobby pins and release the bun. Shake your head a bit and see if the bun moves or not. If it moves, put in more bobby pins to keep it in place.
  6. Repeat the same steps on the other side to make the second bun. Backcomb the other tail just like you did the first. Wrap the tail around itself to make a bun, wrap it as tight or loosely as the other. Secure the second bun with bobby pins.
    • If one of the buns is smaller than the other, gently pull your hair with your fingers to make it appear larger.
  7. Secure loose hair at the neck with bobby pins. Since your hair is short, you will likely have hair that came out of the space buns. Gather these hairs at the back of your head and secure them against the rest of your hair with bobby pins. Check in a mirror that they are all pinned down, if necessary.
    • If you'd rather not have the bobby pins holding your short hair visible, cover them with a stretchy wide headband. Pull the headband up on your forehead and stretch it at the back of your neck so that it covers the bobby pins.

Method 3 of 3: Add braids to your space buns

  1. Opt for braided tails instead of twisted ones to avoid static. After making two tails by gathering equal sections of your hair, secure each ponytail with a rubber band so that it is secure. Braid each ponytail all the way to the end, securing each braid with a different rubber band. Now if you twist the braid into a bun, the hair will hold better.
    • You can always braid your tails whether you're doing half updo or full space buns.
  2. Make a double Dutch braid on the front of your hair for a stylish look. After dividing your hair in half, start braiding the first section above the outer corner of your eye. Add more hair to the braid as you go back over your head. When you get to where you want your space bun, stop braiding and tie the remaining hair into a ponytail. Secure the Dutch braid and tail with a rubber band, and make a bun to finish that side.
    • Do the same with the other part of your hair, creating two Dutch braids on top of your head, which will end in your two space buns.
    • If you are concerned that your Dutch braid will come loose when you put the rest of your hair in a ponytail, secure it with a rubber band first.
  3. Braid the short hair at the back of your neckso that they are not loose. Part towards the back and separate the two sides with hair clips. Turn your head over and start braiding one side, starting at the bottom of your neck and moving up through your head. When you get to the top of your head, secure the braid with a rubber band and proceed to make the rest of your bun.
    • Repeat on the other side of the part to make the other bun as well.
    • Brush your hair one more time while turning your head for a tighter look.
    • Continue adding hair to the braid as you work your way up the length of your head.

Tips

  • Trim static hairs that are sticking up from your space bun by spraying a little hairspray on your hand and flattening the loose hair with your hand.
  • Buy small bobby pins, which are about half the size of regular bobby pins, to make sure they aren't visible in your space buns.
