You don't need a rice cooker to enjoy rice with your favorite meals - you can get the same delicious results with a regular slow cooker. Weigh your rice, add water and turn your slow cooker to the lowest heat setting. You'll have perfect, smooth rice in 2-3 hours with no guesswork or fuss.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Preparing the rice

  1. Put your slow cooker on high heat. The old idea that rice should be cooked low and slow is true. Since slow cookers already use low temperatures to gradually heat food, the highest heat setting will still be significantly less warm than that of a conventional rice cooker.
    • Make sure your slow cooker is properly connected and positioned, and that there are no objects nearby that could cause it to accidentally turn off the power.
    • You can also cook your rice on a lower heat setting if you are out all day. However, keep in mind that this will likely add 3-4 hours to the total cooking time.
  2. Let the rice cook for 2½-3 hours. While the rice is cooking, you don't have to do anything! Put the rice in the pan, turn it on and leave it alone. It really is that easy!
    • If it makes you feel better, you can come back from time to time to check on the rice. Do not leave the lid of the slow cooker in place for too long as this will allow precious moisture to escape.
    • Don't forget to set a timer so you know when your rice is ready to be removed from the slow cooker.

Tip: You know your rice is done when it looks thick and no longer glistens with moisture.

  3. Stir the rice well before serving. Remove the lid from your slow cooker and loosen the rice with a fork or spoon. The rice will be quite hot straight out of the slow cooker, so give it a few minutes to cool to a safe temperature before eating. Enjoy it!
    • It is possible that the layer of rice directly on the cooking surface will get a little crunchy as this is where most of the heat is. If that sounds unappetizing, just scoop out the softer rice and scrape off the drier bits.

Tips

  • With a slow cooker you can also cook more rice in one go than in a conventional rice cooker. Most standard-size slow cookers can handle about 4 cups (800 g) of uncooked rice, which translates to about 8-10 cups (1.5-2 kg) of cooked rice.
  • For more flavorful rice, you can stir in fresh herbs, spices and other herbs before turning on the slow cooker.

  • Slow cooker
