If you have a PS3 that supports older games, you can just keep playing your PS2 games. But you have to do something first to be able to play your games. Once you have done that, you can enjoy your familiar PS2 games again on your new PS3.

Part 1 of 3: Examining the basic conditions

1. Find out if your PS3 supports older games. The Playstation 3 has been changed a number of times, so that some versions support PS2 games and others do not.
   • In general, you can say that older versions of the PS3 do support PS2 games, with later versions this functionality has been removed because Sony assumed that people would now buy the console for PS3 games.
   • You can use the model and serial number to determine if your PS3 supports older games, these numbers can be found on the sticker with the barcode on the bottom or back of your console. The model number consists of 11 digits.
     • The models with CECH-Axx and CECH-Bxx, respectively 60 GB and 20 GB models, support PS2 games. The models with CECH-Cxx and CECH-Exx, 60 GB and 80 GB models respectively, partially support PS2 games.
     • G, H, J, K, L, M, P and Q models do not support older games.
     • The thin models do not support older games.
2. Plug the game into the PS3. You can plug your PS2 game into the PS3 in the same way as a PS3 game. The PS3 should now recognize the game and load the game by itself. Then you can play the game.

Part 2 of 3: Saving a PS2 game to a PS3

1. Go to the menu "Services for Memory Card". In order to save your game progress to the PS3, you need to create an internal memory card on the console's hard drive.
   • The menu is accessed by selecting the "Game" icon "and then, with the game already in the device, selecting" Services for Memory Card (PS / PS2) ".
   • The limit of the card will be 8 MB.
2. Select "New Internal Memory Card". you can also assign an existing memory card slot to a PS2 game, but if you don't have one you will need to create a new one.
3. Select "Internal Memory Card (PS2)". Do not select "Internal Memory Card (PS)", because this will create a memory card slot for the original Playstation instead of the PS2.
4. Change the name. Select the "name" field at the bottom. A keyboard will now open, choose a name for the memory card. After typing, select "OK" to save the name.
5. Press Select to finish. Now the new memory card is assigned to slot 1, or to the next available slot.

Part 3 of 3: Assigning an already existing memory card slot

1. Open the "Services for Memory Card" menu. To access the menu, select the “Game” icon, then, with the game already in the device, select “Services for Memory Card (PS / PS2).” Press Select to continue.
   • You can also assign a PS2 game to an existing PS2 memory card slot from this menu.
2. Find the memory card you want to use. Scroll through the existing internal memory cards until you find the memory card that is empty or you want to overwrite. Select the slot and press "Select" to choose it.
3. Select the "Allocate slots" option. You can see the option on the side or top of the screen. It may also not appear until you select the slot. Select the option and press the "Select" button.
4. Assign the slot. You will now see the option "Slot 1" or "Slot 2". Select which option appears and press the "Select" button on your device to assign the game to the internal memory card slot.
   • If you want to remove the internal memory card from the slot, you can select the slot as described above and select "Remove" instead of "Assign Slot".

Tips

• If your PS3 does not support PS2 games, you can download the games online from the Playstation Store. You have to buy a new game instead of being able to use an old one, but that way you can play an old game on a new Playstation.

• Some PS2 games are only partially supported, so problems may arise during gameplay. Here's a partial list of popular titles:
