Nobody wants to wear jewelry that looks dirty, but earrings are not just cleaned to keep them looking beautiful. The holes in your ears are sensitive and it is important to prevent dirt particles and germs from getting stuck in the holes through your earrings. By regularly cleaning these beautiful jewelry you can ensure that they look and feel beautiful for years to come.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Disinfect with hydrogen peroxide

  1. Wash your hands to avoid spreading more bacteria. Run your hands under hot water and scrub them well with hand soap. Make sure to wash the areas between your fingers as well as the areas up to your wrists. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and dry them with a clean towel afterwards.
    • Washing your hands thoroughly will prevent the earrings from getting even more dirty before you start cleaning.
  2. Soak a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide works very well to kill bacteria and make your earrings shine again. To use hydrogen peroxide, hold a cotton ball, swab, or cotton pad in front of the opening of the hydrogen peroxide bottle. Then tilt the bottle to soak the cotton wool.
  3. Dab the earrings with the cotton ball to clean them. Make sure to clean all nooks and crannies of the earrings with the cotton ball. Treat both earrings for a few minutes, adding more hydrogen peroxide to the cotton ball if necessary. Finally, rinse the earrings in a bowl of water.

Tip: earrings with many small details can be cleaned very well with cotton pads or cotton balls that you have soaked with hydrogen peroxide.

  4. Soak the earrings in hydrogen peroxide to clean them more thoroughly. When cleaning, small tufts of cotton wool can remain on your earrings so that strings of fiber adhere to them. To avoid this, or just clean the earrings more thoroughly, soak them in a small glass with hydrogen peroxide for 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, rinse them in a bowl of water.
  5. Leave the earrings for a few minutes to let them dry. When you have finished cleaning your earrings, put them to dry on a clean cloth. Touch them a few times to make sure they are dry, then store them or put them in your ears when they are dry.

Method 2 of 3: Wash earrings with hot water

  1. Wash your hands before starting. Washing your hands beforehand will prevent more bacteria from getting on your earrings when you clean them. Hold your hands under the hot tap and rub them with hand soap for 20 seconds. Rinse and dry with a clean towel.
    • Make sure you clean your hands up to your wrists and don't forget the spots between your fingers.
  2. Boil hot water in your kettle. Cleaning your earrings with hot water is a perfect method if you have few things in the house and you just want to give your jewelry a little more shine. To start, pour several hundred milliliters of water into your kettle and boil it. If you don't have a kettle, you can also boil water in a pan on the stove.
    • You can also heat the water in a mug in the microwave. First heat it for a minute and a half, then check the temperature and heat the water even longer if necessary.
    • Cleaning your earrings with hot water will not get them as clean as hydrogen peroxide or some other cleaner, but this is a good method if you don't have a lot of cleaning supplies around the house.
  3. Soak your earrings in the hot water for 20 minutes. Pour the water from the kettle into a container or remove the pan from the stove. Put the earrings in the hot water and leave them in for about 20 minutes to clean them.
    • The hot water kills germs and bacteria and loosens the dirt from the surface of your earrings.
    • Hot water is safe for all earrings. If you are cleaning plastic fake earrings, let the water cool for a minute before soaking the earrings in them.
  4. Remove the earrings from the water and scrub them with a toothbrush. Take your earrings out of the water with a spoon or your hand, if the water is cold enough. Gently scrub them with an old toothbrush. Treat one earring at a time to remove any remaining debris. When you are done, rinse the earrings with warm water.

Tip: wet the toothbrush with warm water before scrubbing so that you can clean the earrings even better.

  5. Let the earrings dry on a clean towel. Let the earrings sit for a few minutes or until they are dry. You can also dab them a few times with the towel to remove the excess water. Touch them to see if they are dry and ready to be stored or carried.

Method 3 of 3: Thoroughly clean gold, silver and gemstones

  1. Clean diamonds with dish soap and warm water to prevent discoloration. Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of dish soap with 250 ml of warm water and soak your diamond earrings in it for 3-4 minutes. Remove them from the mixture with a spoon and brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Place them in the mixture for an additional 1-2 minutes, then put them in a bowl of cold water to rinse. Let the earrings dry on a clean towel.

Did you know? Diamonds are strong, but sensitive to cleaning products as they can become discolored. Only use unscented, colorless dish soap and water to clean your earrings.

  2. Wash silver earrings with warm water and baking soda. To clean silver earrings, first line a glass baking dish with aluminum foil, placing the shiny side up. Place the earrings on the aluminum foil and fill the bowl with warm water until the earrings are submerged. Sprinkle baking soda into the water until you see bubbles around the earrings, then let the earrings soak for an hour. Rinse them in a bowl of clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
    • It is important to properly clean silver earrings as they can lose their shine and appear dull and old when they get dirty.
    • With this method you can clean several pairs of silver earrings at once.
  3. Use mild soap and water to clean pearl earrings. Mix lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Dip a soft cleaning cloth in the mixture and use it to gently wipe your earrings. Let them air dry on a towel before putting them away.
    • Do not use harsh chemicals to clean pearl earrings as they are usually more susceptible to damage.
    • Always wipe the pearls with a soft cloth after wearing to keep them looking clean.
  4. Remove dirt from cut gems with a toothpick. Dirt can build up in the corners of cut gemstone earrings and can be difficult to wipe off. Instead, use a match or a toothpick and remove the dirt slowly and carefully.
    • You can also wrap the toothpick in a tissue or cloth to get a softer tip, but it may be less effective for cleaning smaller gaps.

Tips

  • Keep your earrings clean by taking them off before going to sleep, taking a shower, and before going for a swim.
  • You can also purchase a jewelry cleaning device to clean your earrings thoroughly and without too much effort.

Warnings

  • Don't clean your earrings over the sink as you could drop them down the drain. Instead, clean them in a bowl or mug.
