Matte nail polish is very fashionable at the moment. It can look chic and stylish. Unfortunately, it can also be very expensive, and not everyone can just buy a bottle of nail polish that may only be used a few times. There is also a matte topcoat, but what if you want matte nails and you don't have a matte topcoat at home? Fortunately, there are some easy ways to make your regular nail polish matte. This article will show you how to make small amounts of matte nail polish, or an entire bottle.

To step

Method 1 of 5: Apply baking powder

  1. Gather all supplies. If you are going to paint your nails, you have to be quick, because the nail polish dries quickly and hardens. Here's a list of what you should have ready:
    • Basecoat and nail polish
    • Baking powder
    • Fine sieve
    • Small cup or saucer
    • Small, soft make-up brush
  2. Let it sit on your nails for a few minutes. This is long enough to allow a thin layer of baking powder to soak into the nail polish, giving you a matte effect.
  3. Let your nails dry. Your nail polish may still look shiny when wet, so let it dry completely to see the final result. It is better not to use a top coat. Most topcoats are glossy, which negates the matte effect. If you have a matte topcoat, you can use it.

Method 2 of 5: Make an entire bottle of matte nail polish

  1. Gather all supplies. If you want to use matte nail polish more often, you might want to make a whole bottle. Then you don't have to mix the ingredients first. Here's a list of what you need:
    • Nail polish
    • Corn (starch) flour, matte eyeshadow, mica or cosmetic pigment powder
    • Fine sieve (for corn (starch) flour)
    • Toothpick (for eyeshadow)
    • Square piece of paper of 5 x 5 cm
    • Nail polish
    • 2 - 3 small balls (optional)
    • Small cup or saucer
  2. Choose nail polish and powder. Make sure the bottle you are going to use is only half full. Do not take a full bottle, because it will overflow when you add the powder.
    • If you want to make matte top coat, you need to take colorless, clear nail polish and cornstarch or cornmeal. You can apply this topcoat over any color nail polish to make it matte.
    • If you want to make regular matte nail polish, you will need a solid color nail polish and cornmeal or cornstarch.
    • If you want a custom color, you need clear nail polish. You should therefore add matte eyeshadow, skin-friendly mica powder or a cosmetic pigment powder. If you add some corn starch it will become even more matte.
  3. Prepare the powder. Whatever powder you use, it has to be very nice. Lumps in the powder create lumps in your nail polish. If you are using corn flour, put it through a fine sieve into a small container. If you are using eyeshadow, scrape it out of the box first and then grind it up with the end of a brush or brush. Mica powder and pigment powder is already fine and should not contain lumps.
    • You only need a few pinches of cornmeal or cornstarch.
    • If you are using eyeshadow, take an entire box per 1/2 bottle of nail polish.
  4. Leave the nail polish on for 24 hours before using it. Then the pigments and powders can dissolve so that your nail polish becomes smoother and less lumpy.
  5. Be careful what type of topcoat you use. Topcoats are usually glossy, so smearing them over your matte nail polish will negate the effect. See if you can find a matte topcoat that matches your nail polish.

Method 3 of 5: Using eyeshadow

  1. Gather the supplies. Sometimes it is difficult to find nail polish in the right color. Fortunately, you can use matte eyeshadow to turn clear nail polish into matte colored polish. If you just want a matte top coat, you can use cornmeal instead of eyeshadow. Here's a list of what you need:
    • Transparent nail polish
    • Matte eyeshadow
    • Corn starch (optional)
    • Toothpick
    • Small cup or saucer
  2. Choose the eyeshadow. Whatever color you want, it has to be matte. You can also use cosmetic pigment powder. That is already in powder form, so you no longer have to pulverize it like with eyeshadow.
    • If you want to make a clear, matte topcoat, use cornstarch.
  3. Let the nail polish dry. You will not really see the effect of the eyeshadow until the nail polish is completely dry. Do not use a top coat; most topcoats are glossy, so you cancel the effect. If you have a matte topcoat it is fine.

Method 4 of 5: Use steam with normal nail polish

  1. Gather the supplies. Once you've applied the polish, you need to act quickly. This method only works with wet nail polish. If you let the nail polish dry first, it will be too late. Here's a list of what you need:
    • Nail polish and base coat
    • Water
    • Pan
  2. Take your hands away from the pan. After a few seconds, the nail polish should be matte. Remove your hands from the pan and let the polish continue to dry.

Method 5 of 5: Use a matte topcoat with normal nail polish

  1. Gather all supplies. If you can't find a matte nail polish in the color you want, you can always add a matte topcoat over your regular nail polish that you well likes to smear. Here's what you need:
    • Basecoat
    • Nail polish
    • Matte topcoat
  2. Make sure you are happy with the way your nails look now. A matt topcoat clearly shows all imperfections, including stripes and imperfections. Make sure the nail polish is exactly how you want it; the matte topcoat will not cover up your mistakes like a glossy topcoat often does.
  3. Choose a good quality matte topcoat. The bottle must say "mat", otherwise it will not work. Keep in mind that some matte topcoats lighten or change the color of your nail polish. If the top coat looks milky or cloudy in the bottle, that usually changes the color of your nail polish.
  4. Apply the top coat on your nails and let it dry. Sometimes it takes a long time for a topcoat to dry. Even if the nail polish feels dry to the touch, it may still be wet underneath. Be very careful with your nails for the first two hours.
    • Note that a matte topcoat is more about the appearance than the protection of your nails. Not all topcoats protect the nail polish from peeling off.

Tips

  • If you are painting your nails, consider putting nail polish on the top edge of your nail as well. Then you shed the paint less quickly.
  • If you are using eyeshadow, use old eyeshadow that is out of date. Then you don't waste eyeshadow, but you can still use it.
  • To prevent your nail polish from mixing, make sure to clean the brush thoroughly when you're done. If you don't do this, all your nail polish will become matte. Color can also get into your transparent topcoat.
  • When the matte nail polish is dry, you can draw patterns on it with normal nail polish. That gives a nice contrast. Metallic, such as gold or silver, works very well for this.

Warnings

  • Be careful with the type of topcoat you use. Most topcoats are glossy, and that negates the matte effect.
