Coffee capsules are a popular alternative to other single-use products, such as the Keurig K cups. But unlike K cups, coffee capsules can be used in different ways. You can use them in a machine specially designed for capsules, or in another type of coffee maker. The capsules can even be used without a device!

To step

Method 1 of 3: Using a capsule coffee maker

  1. Fill the water tank. Take a measuring cup and fill the water tank of the appliance with water up to the "max" mark. Only use cool, clean water. You can use filtered or distilled water if you want. This reduces mineral deposits and makes the device last longer and work better.
  2. Remove the capsule from the packaging. Coffee capsules are usually individually packaged to maintain freshness. Remove the capsule from the packaging, taking care not to damage it. To do this, tear along the perforated line of the coffee capsule packaging to take it out without damaging the capsule.
  3. Insert the capsule into the coffee machine. Unfold the part of the capsule holder of the device. Depending on the device, you may have to press a button to open it. Then carefully insert the capsule into the device. The capsule should slide easily into the capsule holder. Once it is in place, close the container.
  4. Adjust the settings of the device. Depending on the strength you want, you have to set the device. The device should have a light, medium or strong setting. If not, it probably has a setting for the amount of water you want to fill the mug with. The more water, the weak the coffee will be.
    • If you don't adjust the settings, the machine will likely brew a medium sized cup of coffee.
  5. Make your coffee. After adjusting the settings, press the "Start" button on the capsule machine. As soon as the device starts, hot water enters the coffee capsule and then into your mug.
    • Enjoy your cup of coffee after the water flow has ceased.

Method 2 of 3: Try coffee capsules without a device

  1. Place a capsule in your coffee mug. Depending on the type of capsule you have, you may be able to just put it in a coffee mug and pour water over it. To do this, take the capsule out of the package and drop it into your mug.
  2. Pour boiling water into your mug. Slowly pour boiling water into the mug. Stop pouring when the water is within an inch of the top of the mug. Be careful not to burn yourself with the water.
  3. Allow the capsule to withdraw. Let the capsule soak in the water. If the capsule floats to the top of the mug, use a spoon to keep it submerged. Stir the water from time to time. Pay close attention, because your cup of coffee will not be tasty if the capsule is not absorbed properly.
  4. Take the capsule out after a few minutes. The amount of time you leave the capsule in the water determines how strong the coffee will be. You should therefore consider how strong you want your coffee to be before taking out the capsule.
    • If you let the capsule sit for two to three minutes, you will get a weak cup of coffee.
    • If you let the capsule sit for four minutes, you will get a normal cup of coffee.
    • If you let the capsule sit for five to six minutes, you will have a strong cup of coffee.
    • Discard the capsule when you are done.

Method 3 of 3: Place coffee capsules in an incompatible device

  1. Purchase a coffee capsule holder or similar device. Find a holder that is compatible with your disposable coffee maker. Read the product packaging and reviews to make sure it will work with your device. This is important because there are different capsule holders on the market. Not all of them fit every device. Popular holders include:
    • Pod Holster
    • Solofill
    • EZ-Cup
  2. Place a coffee capsule in the holder. Don't force it. It should slide easily into the holster. Close the container after inserting the capsule. Many containers close with a little force.
  3. Load the holder into your device. Carefully insert the holder into the device. Place it where you would normally put a K-cup, another type of single-serving coffee product or the coffee. Make sure you don't force it. If the holder is compatible with your device, it should slide easily into the device. After you load it, you need to close the coffee drawer. On most devices you have to push it down gently.
  4. Place the mug on the drip tray. Depending on the type of appliance, place your mug on the drip tray or where the coffee comes out. Take your time and set it correctly so that the coffee does not spill.
  5. Set up the device. After loading the holder, you have to adjust the settings so that your cup of coffee is as weak or strong as you want. Put the appliance on a single portion. Depending on the device, you can choose how much water you want to fill the cup with. This determines how strong the coffee will be.
  6. Press start. Once you press start, the device will flood the container - and the capsule - with water. The water (now coffee) is then led into your mug. Go ahead and enjoy your coffee once the power is off and your cup is filled.
