If you are a girl who prefers comfortable over hot pink and makeup, then you might want to try a tomboy look. This article takes a detailed look at the clothes, shoes and accessories that are inseparable from the tomboy look.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Clothing

  1. Take a look at the boys section. If you want to dress like a tomboy, then you should at least take a look at its origins. Go to the boys' section of your favorite stores and see what's on the shelves. Look for T-shirts with prints and cool shirts. There is a good chance that the clothes will be a little too wide for you, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Choose clothes that you like and see how they look on you. If they are really too big, you can always try to take them.
    • There is also a lot of clothing that is suitable for both men and women. Unisex clothing can be found in many stores.
  2. Look for T-shirts. Loose, comfortable T-shirts are an important part of the tomboy style. Cotton shirts in boyish colors (dark green, blue, gray, black, brown, burgundy, etc.) are always useful, and will suit almost any outfit.
    • Get some stylized T-shirts too. For example, shirts with band names, skater themes and skulls are all suitable for the tomboy look. You can also buy shirts with sarcastic and funny images or phrases.
  3. Choose pants instead of skirts. Of course you don't have to throw out all your skirts right away, but tomboys usually don't wear skirts or dresses. They prefer cool, comfortable pants that look a little boyish. For example, opt for "boyfriend jeans" - these are pants that look like boys' pants, but are tailored to the girl's body. You can also opt for skinny skate pants, worn-out pants with a bootcut, or sports pants. Black opaque leggings work well for the tomboy too.
    • If for some reason you have to wear a skirt, wear it with leggings, All-Stars, and a T-shirt from your favorite band. These additions will make the skirt less girlish.
  4. Think of shorts when it is hot outside. Instead of the Daisy Duke pants, you can opt for wide, cut-off jeans. Or opt for longer shorts that reach just above your knee. Stretch shorts and surf pants are great when you're on the go.
  5. Opt for flannel. Flannel is a unisex fabric that makes an excellent addition to almost any outfit. It is a fantastic fabric, because you can wear it as a shirt, but also as a lightweight jacket. Jeans, a cotton T-shirt and your favorite flannel shirt are ready.
  6. Wear a hoodie. Hoodies and cardigans go well with the tomboy look - especially for tomboys who live in colder climates. Choose a plain hoodie in a dark color (black goes with everything) and you will soon find out that you can no longer live without it. If it gets too hot for you, you can tie your hoodie around your waist to create a casual, boyish look.
    • You can also opt for knitted cardigans. Especially when it is cold outside, these vests are wonderful. A welcome tomboy look is a knitted cardigan over boyfriend jeans.
  7. Wear sporty clothes. If you don't like jeans, opt for sporty pants and T-shirts. It's even better if you can wear clothes that represent your favorite sports clubs. Tomboys can compete with the men in terms of sport. Then why not dress like that?
    • On cold days, wear a thick sweater with the logo of your favorite sports club.
  8. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable. While this section has listed suitable tomboy attire, you won't be a real tomboy unless you're confident enough to wear whatever you want. The point is that you can wear what you like, without getting the impression that you look sloppy or unkempt. If you consider yourself a tomboy but still feel like wearing a dress, go for it. The most important thing is to stay yourself.

Part 2 of 3: Shoes

  1. Purchase sports shoes. As a tomboy, it is important to be able to run around easily. That means you cannot wear high heels. Instead, opt for cool sneakers that fit comfortably. As a rule of thumb, you can use the following pattern: if you can't run in them, they probably aren't suitable for tomboys.
    • Shoe brands that make cool sneakers include: DC, Vans, Nike, Adidas, Converse, Etnies, Airwalk and Supras.
  2. Trade in your ballet flats for cool loafers. Loafers with a pattern are absolutely great. Brands like Vans and Toms make great loafers with cool prints. These are comfortable, and are also suitable for running.
    • Look for loafers with checks, skulls, animal prints, band logos, tribals, etc.
  3. Try high sneakers. Many tomboys have been swearing by Converse sneakers for many years. They are available in different colors and styles.
    • To spice up your shoes, you can replace the standard white laces with brightly colored laces. You can find these colored laces at most shoe stores.

Part 3 of 3: Accessories and haircut

  1. Wear caps. You can complete your tomboy look with baseball caps. With these caps you can show which club you are for, and they are also very functional: they prevent sun, rain, dirt, dust and hair from getting into your eyes - unless you wear your cap backwards. You can also opt for other headgear, such as a cap or a hat.
  2. Avoid flashy jewelry. In fact, it's generally best to avoid jewelry altogether - especially if you play sports. If you've had your ears pierced, opt for studs or small rings. Don't wear dangling earrings (these are for the girls girls). When it comes to necklaces, you can opt for simple objects (such as a shell or a coin) on a leather string. You can put these under your shirt while exercising, and are naturally quite unisex.
    • If you like bracelets, ignore the shiny ones. Rather opt for leather or plastic straps. You can find these at various stores, such as River Island and Forever 21.
  3. Put your hair up. Choose a (half) ponytail when you run. A French braid also works well if you want to keep your hair out of your face when exercising. By putting your hair up you can start running in seconds, without worrying about getting your hair in your eyes.
  4. Cut your hair short. Of course, only do this if you want to (and your parents agree). Short hair is great when you exercise. Wear a headband to keep your bangs or loose locks from getting in your eyes.

Tips

  • Being a tomboy isn't all about your clothes; your personality is just as important! Play games, do sports, climb trees, stand up for yourself, etc.
  • If you eat in a chic restaurant but don't feel like wearing a dress, you can always opt for nice pants with a nice top.
  • You can still opt for girly clothes every now and then.
  • Play sports and be active! Do extracurricular activities. For example, register with a sports club. Hang out with guys. Guys are very easy going, and usually don't hold a grudge. You can make fun of boys without any consequences. Hopefully this helps!
  • Wear round, dark sunglasses.
  • Wear baggy sweatpants.
  • Try wearing a wristband.
  • Most importantly, you stay yourself! You don't have to become a tomboy if people think you are too girly. Stay loyal to yourself!
  • Don't worry about what other people say about you. Just be yourself.
