It may sound strange to use a can of beer on your hair instead of drinking it empty, but beer is known to have a beneficial effect on both hair and skin. The malt and hops in beer are rich in proteins that help repair damaged hair and improve volume. The sucrose and maltose sugars in the beer also contribute to the creation of shine. If your hair is looking a little dull or lifeless, a bottle of beer can be your salvation.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Add beer to your hair

  1. Remove the carbon dioxide from your beer. Pour a bottle or can of beer into a pitcher or bowl and leave it overnight or all day. The more of the beer exposed to air, the faster it will oxidize and flatten.
    • Beer becomes flat due to the escape of the carbon dioxide present in it. It is important that the carbon dioxide is removed from the beer when using the beer to treat the hair as carbon dioxide in combination with water can lead to hard water or water with a high mineral content. The presence of carbon dioxide can hinder the effects of shampoos and make it more difficult for you to wash your hair effectively. Hard water also causes the scales of your hair to lift, making your hair look tatty and rough.
  2. Wash your hair with shampoo. Use your normal shampoo, but skip the conditioner. The beer will act as your conditioner instead.
    • You can put the flat beer in a closed jar or bottle and take it with you to the bathroom or a place where you can easily reach it in the shower.
  3. Massage your hair with beer for one minute. Pour the jar or bottle of beer into your hair and lather on your scalp.
    • Beer is also good for the skin, as brewer's yeast helps to reduce sebum production and can keep the oily skin on the face or scalp under control.
    • You can also wet the ends of your hair with beer first, leaving it in your hair for about five minutes before rinsing the rest of your hair with beer.
  4. Rinse out the beer. It is recommended that you do not rinse the beer completely and leave it in your hair for better effect. Then dry your hair with a towel.
    • It may take a few washes before you can feel and see the results.
    • It's best to wash your hair with beer only a few times a week as it can dry out your hair quite a bit with daily use.

Method 2 of 2: Improve your beer flush

  1. Add a few drops of essential oils to your beer. The alcohol in the beer can be harmful and drying to the hair, but these effects can be counteracted by adding some essential oils. Not only does it add extra nutrition to your beer rinse, but can also have a calming effect when you massage the beer into your hair, while still smelling great. Consider adding the following:
    • Lemon oil: It strengthens the hair, adds shine and helps against dandruff.
    • Almond Oil: Hydrates and soothes the scalp.
    • Chamomile Oil: Adds shine and softens the hair.
    • Jojoba Oil: Nourishes the hair and moisturizes the scalp.
    • Lavender Oil: Acts as a deep conditioner that moisturizes, nourishes and adds antioxidants to the hair.
    • Sandalwood Oil: Helps with dry or split ends.
  2. Mix a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with the beer. Vinegar helps counteract rough or brittle hair by smoothing the scales of your hair. Shampoo lifts these scales and prevents your hair from feeling smooth and looking shiny.
    • Consider unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in place of standard vinegar. Unpasteurized vinegar is not distilled, heated, or clarified. It contains a lot of good bacteria, nutrients and enzymes that are necessary to improve hair structure.
    • You can mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 250 ml of water instead of beer and treat your hair the same way you would with a beer wash.
    • It's best not to use a vinegar rinse more than a few times a week. When used daily, it can dry out your hair.

Tips

  • Leave the beer rinse on for five minutes and then comb it through your hair to distribute the rinse better.

Warnings

  • Do not drink the beer after use, especially if you have added essential oils.
  • If you are on medication for skin problems such as acne or rosacea, do not use beer as it can cause the skin to swell, causing a rash and irritation.
