Whether you can't find hair ties or want to try some new hairstyles, updating your hair with a pencil is an excellent option. There are several ways you can put your hair up with a pencil, so feel free to experiment with different methods. You can use a pencil to make a simple bun, create a messy inverted bun if you have longer hair, create a twisted bun with two pencils for a unique hairstyle, or go for something more creative like a braided pencil bun.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Using a pencil to make a simple bun

  1. Gather your hair in a ponytail at the center of the back of your head. Use your hands to gather your hair in the center of the back of your head. Hold your hair in a ponytail by placing your index finger over it and your thumb around the bottom.
    • Since you are tucking the sharpened end of the pencil into the bun, make sure that you are holding the ponytail in the center of your head and not lower so that you don't get poked by the pencil.
  2. Insert the pencil into the bun and turn it down. First, push the pencil diagonally up into the braid to collect the hair. Stop pushing when the pencil reaches the top of your scalp. Then turn the pencil clockwise to secure your hair. When you can no longer turn the pencil, push it a little more into the braid to secure the bun.
    • Depending on how tightly you braided your hair, you may be able to twist the bun until the pencil is vertical with the sharp tip pointing straight down. You may also be able to turn it only slightly. Both options look good and make sure your bun is secure.
