Part 1 of 3: Hairstyles for every day

  1. Think about your situation. When looking for a hairstyle for every day, keep the details of your life in mind. Think about how you should show up for work, how much time you have to spend on your hair in the morning, and how much effort you want to put into your new look.
    • Whatever hairstyle you choose, it should suit your personality. You have to feel good with your new model, so don't choose something that doesn't suit your taste. If your hairdresser recommends something you are uncomfortable with, politely say what you think and find something else.
  2. Get your hair cut. You can go to the hairdresser you always go to, but if you are looking for a new hairdresser, ask friends or colleagues for tips. Bring pictures of hairstyles you like and ask the hairdresser to think it will suit your face.
    • Remember what hairstyle you are getting now so that you can refer to it next time. If you like it well cut, you can tip.
    • Ask your hairdresser how to maintain and style the haircut. He / she can tell you what kind of products you need and how often you should have it cut.
  3. Choose hair products. Unfortunately, most of us need more than just a comb and water. Start with different products from a cheap brand while you are still in the experimental phase. When you have found something you like (such as wax or clay), you can start looking for the right brand. Here are some possible products to try, along with the type of hairstyle you can create with them:
    • Serums or creams. This allows you to pluck or control frizzy hair without making your hair hard or fix it.
    • Mousse. Mousse is used to create volume and shine, with little fixation. For best results, put it in your wet hair and let it dry.
    • Gel. Gel contains alcohol that dries it out and makes your hair hard so that it stays in place. For the strongest hold, put the gel in your wet hair.
    • Pomade, wax or clay. With these products you can mold your hair into all kinds of difficult shapes, such as a grease top or curls (if you normally have straight hair). Note that sometimes you have to wash your hair several times to get it out, so don't use too much of it. The pea-sized amount is enough if you have short, medium, or thin hair. Pomade and wax give shine and you use for a "wet look", clay is matte and more natural.
    • Hair glue. Have you ever wondered how people straighten their hair in such a large mohawk? They probably use a kind of "Hair glue", which gives the strongest fixation. Be careful though, as the product will build up a film around your hair, so wash your hair well between uses.
  4. Consider your needs and the situation. Why are you going to style your hair? Are you going to a party? Are you meeting your girlfriend's parents? Do you just want hip hair? Make sure your hair suits the situation.
    • Keep in mind that for formal events, you should choose a slightly more traditional style. Your cousin may not like you to show up at his wedding with a mohawk.
    • Rather, choose a style that resembles your everyday haircut; then you feel most at ease.
  5. Use good quality products. If you've started with cheap products for your everyday hairstyle, you might want to switch to more expensive items for a special occasion. Cheap products are more likely to cause a layer around your hair or make your hair look dry or greasy.
    • Use the products a few times before using them on a special occasion so that you know how your hair reacts to them.
  6. Make sure it is neat. The most important aspect of the special occasion hairstyle is that it should look like you put a lot of effort into it.
    • Make your part with a comb so that it is nice and straight and sharp.
    • Use a product to keep it in shape.
    • Use a product that gives some extra shine.
  7. Choose a hairstyle that suits your face shape. If you know your face shape, choose a hairstyle that matches it. It may take some patience as you may need to let your hair grow out a bit to style it appropriately. Here are some suggestions based on face shapes:
    • Oval face: You can choose almost any hairstyle, but bangs will round out your face.
    • Square face: Opt for a softer haircut. Short, sleek haircuts make your face even sharper. Do not make a middle part.
    • Elongated face: Choose a balanced hairstyle. Short sides and long on top make your face look even longer. Hold some hair in your face and your face will appear shorter.
    • Round face: Do not use sharp bangs or a lot of hair in the face.
    • Diamond-shaped face: Rather opt for a slightly longer haircut. Avoid sharp shapes at the ears or hair that is too straight.
    • Heart-shaped face: Opt for longer hair. Facial hair such as a beard, mustache or goatee can also help balance the bottom half of your face.
    • Triangular face: Opt for a hairstyle that gives some volume on top. Waves or curls are a great way to create volume.
  8. Find out what kind of hair you have. Is your hair wavy, straight or curly? Is it thin, thick or in between? Certain hairstyles work better with your hair type, making it easier to style.
  9. Choose a hairstyle that suits your hair type. While some hairstyles can work with any type of hair, most are better suited to a particular hair type. Watch your hair fall naturally and choose a hairstyle that matches it.
    • If you straight hair you can opt for a 1920s "gangster" hairstyle. You can also let it grow long (if it is not too thin), or cut it short.
      • The 1920s "gangster" hairstyle has very short sides that flow into even shorter sideburns. On top it stays about 3 to 5 cm longer. To style it, comb some gel through your hair on top. Do not choose this hairstyle if you have curls or waves.
      • If you want messier hair, let it fall over your shoulders. Styling is easy, towel dry and add some cream.
      • You can also get a haircut that is a bit longer on the sides and on top than the back. Put mousse in your hair and comb it back. Don't do this if you have curls.
      • Or get a short haircut that is the same length everywhere. This easy-care style does not really need to be styled with products.
    • If you have curls or waves, you can top it off, let it grow long, or cut it short.
      • A crest is a classic hairstyle. It is longer on top than on the sides (2: 1) and blends into each other. Style it with pomade and comb back on top. Do not take this hairstyle if you have very fine, straight or thin hair.
      • If you want messier hair, let it fall over your shoulders. Styling is easy, towel dry and add some cream. If you want an "out of bed" look, ask your stylist to texture and style with gel.
      • Or get a short haircut that is the same length all over. This easy-care style does not really need to be styled with products.
    • If you have a receding hairline, just keep it short. If you dare you can shave everything off and get a beard or goatee.
  10. Choose the length of your sideburns. The average length of classic sideburns is to the center of your ear, but this can vary depending on your face shape and features. Whatever length you choose, make sure they match your hairstyle. So if you have short hair, your sideburns should also be short and well-trimmed. Sideburns can be longer and thicker if you have long hair.
    • Longer sideburns make your face narrower, while short sideburns can make your face wider.

Tips

  • If you are unsure about what to do with your hair, consult a hairdresser. He / she can give you professional advice.
  • Don't use too many products in your hair, because that makes it unhealthy. Wash your hair regularly so that the scraps don't pile up.
  • Think about how you want your hair to be and then get it cut that way.
