Losing your phone can be extremely dangerous to the security of your information. Your phone can also be used to prank your friends by receiving a call from "someone very important" who wants to talk to you. It can also be useful for testing how loud you want the sound of your ringtone. There are all kinds of options in the settings of your phone or via external apps.

Method 1 of 4: Using an app to ring your smartphone

1. Download an app for your mobile device. You can use apps that make it look like you are receiving a call. Search the app store on your iPhone, Blackberry, Android or other smartphone using a search term such as "fake call". Both free and paid options are listed in the app store. Make sure to read the reviews to determine which features best meet your needs, as the apps differ significantly from each other.
   • You may also find apps that make fake calls by specific people such as celebrities, characters, or someone else. These apps may not provide the same features as some generic apps, but they can come in handy for special occasions such as holidays or birthdays.
2. Configure the app. You may have options to set up a fake identity for your mysterious caller, use a contact from your contact list, pre-record audio, or schedule a call. Plan when you want to receive a call in a certain situation.
   • Apps provide the ability to dial a name and phone number and use a photo to create the identity of the fake caller.
   • When you receive a call, the interface of the call will be the same as the interface of normal calls on your phone. You can also choose from other interfaces if it doesn't match your device. Some apps even let you design your own interface. Try to make it look like yours as closely as possible. Your joke can be discovered if you hand your phone over to someone familiar with your device.
   • Apps can contain audio clips on a variety of topics, with different types of personalities and possibly even the ability to create your own compatible sound file. The app may not offer the option to record a conversation, but you can use other apps to record sound.
   • Apps offer the option to place the call immediately. If you want the app to call at a later time, you can set it to call after a certain period or at a certain time. You can let the app run in the background or put your phone in sleep mode so that you will receive the call.
3. Activate the call. Make sure to practice the situation beforehand. Try to practice and memorize the call so that it comes across as a convincing situation. If you need to give your phone to someone, make sure the app isn't visible.
   • Your phone will still receive normal calls from other phones and they can interfere with your prank. Make sure you don't schedule the call when you expect a normal call.

Method 2 of 4: Make a call with another phone

1. Find another phone. You can use your landline, a pay phone or you can use someone else's phone. Always ask permission before using someone else's phone.
2. Call your own phone number. If the call is dropped immediately or you are directed to voicemail to record a message, the signal may have failed and you may have to try again, or the phone is turned off and will not produce any sound.
3. Listen so you can hear your phone. If the phone rings and you don't hear a ringtone, the phone may be on silent and vibrate instead of ringing. In this case, you will hear a soft hum. When the device vibrates, you may hear it vibrate against another surface, such as a table.
   • Search places you visit often. Your phone may have fallen behind a table or furniture or is covered by other objects, making it difficult to hear the ringing or vibration sound.

Method 3 of 4: Try out your ringtone on your smartphone

1. Open the "Settings" app on your phone. If this app is not on your home screen, search under "All apps" on your phone.
2. Configure the ringtone sound. This step may vary depending on the type of device you are using.
   • On iPhone, you need to select the "Sounds and Vibration Patterns" section. Scroll until you find the "Ringtone" option. This will display your current ringtone. Press a ringtone to hear a preview or press "Apply" to save your changes.
   • On Android, this may be under "Sounds" or "Sound & Notifications". Select "Phone ringtone" to select a ringtone and press "Preview" to play the ringtone. Press "Apply" to save your changes.
3. Test the ringtone sound. You can adjust how loud the ringtone is played when you receive an incoming call.
   • On iPhone, you need to press "Sounds" and then change the "Ringtone and Alarms" slider so that the ringtone plays at a specific volume.
   • On Android, choose "Volume" and then adjust the "Ringtone & Notifications" slider to try out your ringtone.

Method 4 of 4: Configure discovery services for your smartphone

1. Configure tracking services on another device. Depending on the type of phone you are using, most major carriers offer free options to locate your phone, but these must be preset. You can make a call or send a notification to your phone to make a sound.
   • IPhone users need a phone that supports iOS9 and have iWork for iOS installed for tracking software to be effective. Use an internet browser to create and configure an iCloud account on icloud.com. Log in to your iCloud account or create a free account, if you don't have one yet.
   • Android users must open Android Device Manager on their smartphone. You can open the "Settings" app and scroll down to press "Google" and then "Security". Or you can use the "Google Settings" app and press "Security".
2. Configure your phone so that it can be located. The following steps may vary depending on the type of phone you are using.
   • IPhone users must open the iCloud app. Open the iCloud app on your iPhone. In the app, scroll down and turn on "Find My iPhone". A new screen will appear. Press "Allow" to continue.
   • Android users must give their phone permission to be located remotely. Under "Android Device Manager" you need to press "Locate this device remotely". Go to the "Settings" app, which is not the same as "Google Settings". Scroll down and then press "Location" to make sure all location services are enabled.
3. Test your phone ringtone. You will have to use another device, such as a computer, for this.
   • IPhone users must go to iCloud.com or access Find My iPhone from another iPhone or iPad. Use the iCloud app for this. Click or press "Find My iPhone". This will take you to a map with the last known location of your phone. You can choose "Play Sound" or "Send Message" to make your iPhone make a sound.
   • Android users should go to android.com/devicemanager in a browser to make sure the device appears on the map. Press or click the "Ring" option to make your phone make a sound. Make sure the other device is signed in to the same Google account as the phone you are trying to locate.

Tips

• When you use services to locate your phone, they must already be preset. If you use the service in an attempt to locate your phone, your phone may not be recognized.
• Your phone will remain silent when Do Not Disturb is on. Look for an icon or other indicator on your screen or check your phone's settings to see if Do Not Disturb is turned on.
• Your phone will not make a sound if the battery is empty or if the device is turned off, so the tracking software will probably not work.
