This wikiHow teaches you how to find out the IP address of Facebook, and thus the physical location of Facebook servers.

To step

Method 1 of 2: In Windows

  1. Right-click on the Start menu. This can be found in the lower left corner of the screen in most Windows versions. A menu of quick access options will appear.
    • You can also press ⊞ Win+X click to open this menu.
  2. Click on Command Prompt. This app's icon resembles a square; clicking on it opens Command Prompt.
    • If you don't see Command Prompt in this menu, type "Command Prompt" in the search field of Start menus and click Command Prompt at the top of the search results.
    • You may not be able to open Command Prompt on a computer on a network or on a shared computer (such as at school or work).
  3. Type ping www.facebook.com -t in the Command Prompt. There is no specific text field to type in, but the text should immediately appear in the Command Prompt command window.
    • Make sure not to use any special characters while typing and the spaces only as indicated.
  4. Press ↵ Enter. The command is now executed, and thus the address of Facebook is retrieved. You will see a series of numbers, such as "12.34.56.78" (or something similar) appear in the command window; this string of numbers is Facebook's IP address.

Method 2 of 2: On a Mac

  1. Open Spotlight Search. You do this by clicking on the magnifying glass in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Type Terminal in the search bar. You will see apps appear below the bar as you type.
  3. Click on the Terminal icon. This looks like a black window with a white "> _" in the top left corner.
  4. Type ping facebook.com in the Terminal. With this command you get the IP address of Facebook.
    • Make sure not to add extra spaces or characters to the assignment.
  5. Press ⏎ Return. The Terminal command is executed, and thus the IP address of Facebook is displayed.
  6. Look at Facebook's IP address. It is a string of numbers to the right of the line of text, marked "[Number] bytes of" (except for the colon at the end).
    • For example, the IP address might look like "12 .34.56.78" or something similar.
