If you often style your hair with a curling iron, hot rollers, a flat iron, or a blow dryer, you can do a lot of damage to your hair. Using a hair or heat protectant spray will cover your hair so the heat will burn away the moisture from the spray instead of your hair's natural moisture. You can buy commercially available hair protectant spray, but making it at home allows you to control what's in it. Even better; you may already have all the ingredients at home.

Ingredients

Simple hair protectant spray

  • 175 ml of distilled water
  • 24 to 36 drops of avocado oil

Hair protecting spray based on conditioner

  • 1 tablespoon (13 g) coconut oil, melted
  • Hair conditioner
  • 235 ml of distilled water
  • 4 drops of almond oil

Hair protectant spray with essential oils

  • 1 teaspoon (4.5 g) of fractionated coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) sweet almond oil
  • 2 teaspoons (10 g) of hair conditioner
  • 235 ml of distilled water
  • 5 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 5 drops of geranium essential oil

To step

Method 1 of 3: Prepare simple hair protectant spray

  1. Pour the water into a spray bottle. You can mix your hair protectant spray in the bottle you plan to keep it in. Start by filling the bottle with 175 ml of distilled or filtered water. Since water is denser than oil, it is important to add the water first so they can mix well.
    • You can use a plastic or glass spray bottle, but make sure it can hold at least 2 ounces.
  2. Add the avocado oil. When you have added the water to the bottle, add 24 to 36 drops of avocado oil and mix it together. Add more oil if you have thick coarse hair and less oil if you have fine or thin hair.
    • The ratio of water to oil for the spray is 4 to 6 drops for every 30 ml of water. You can adjust the recipe to make as much or as little protective spray as you need.
    • You can exchange the avocado oil for other oils. Sunflower, argan, and macadamia nut oils are other options to consider.
  3. Shake the bottle to combine the ingredients. After adding the oil, shake the bottle vigorously to combine the water and oil. The spray can separate when you store it, so make sure to shake the bottle well before each use.
  4. Spray the mixture on your hair for heat styling. When you want to use the hair protectant spray, spray it lightly on your hair. Use your fingers or a comb to work the spray through your hair so you know all of the hair is covered. Then style your hair as usual with your favorite heat styling tool, such as a curling iron, flat iron or blow dryer.
    • You can use the spray on wet or dry hair.

Method 2 of 3: Make a conditioner-based hair protectant spray

  1. Fill a spray bottle with water. Pour 235 ml of distilled water into a spray bottle. Make sure the bottle is large enough to leave about 2 inches (5 cm) of space at the top.
    • You can use a plastic or glass spray bottle for the hair protectant spray.
  2. Add the coconut and almond oil. Mix 15 g of melted coconut oil and 4 drops of almond oil with the water in the bottle. It usually helps to use a drug dropper to add the oils to the bottle.
    • You can swap the almond oil for argan or grape seed oil if you prefer.
  3. Add some hair conditioner. When the water and oils in the bottle are mixed, squeeze a dollop of your favorite conditioner into the palm of your hand. Carefully add it to the bottle with the other ingredients.
    • You can use the conditioner of your choice, but make sure it contains silicone. These are the ingredients that will help cover and protect your hair.
  4. Shake the bottle to combine all the ingredients. When all the ingredients are in the spray bottle, mix them by shaking the bottle well. The spray can separate when you store it, so remember to shake it well before each use.
    • Don't be concerned if the mixture has built up some suds after shaking. That is completely normal. The spray will settle into a milky mixture on its own when it has had time to rest.
  5. Apply the spray to your hair before using the heat. When you're ready to use the spray, hold the bottle about 6 inches from your head and spray evenly over your hair. Work the spray through your hair with your fingers and style your hair as you usually do with your heat styling tool.

Method 3 of 3: Make hair protectant spray with essential oils

  1. Pour half of the water into a spray bottle. Add 120 ml of distilled water to a spray bottle. Make sure the bottle can hold at least 295ml to allow room to add the rest of the ingredients.
    • Since the hair protectant spray contains essential oils, you will need to use a glass spray bottle to store it. Essential oils can break down more quickly in a plastic container.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients. When half the water is in the bottle, add 1 teaspoon (4.5 g) of fractionated coconut oil, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sweet almond oil, and 2 teaspoons (10 g) of hair conditioner. Then add 5 drops of clary sage essential oil and 5 drops of geranium essential oil.
    • You can use the conditioner you usually use on your hair.
  3. Add the remaining water and shake the bottle well. When all other ingredients are in the spray bottle, add the remaining 120ml of distilled water. Shake the bottle well to combine all the ingredients.
    • Shake the hair protectant spray before each use in case the oils and water have separated.
  4. Spray your hair with the spray and work it through your hair. To use, spray the spray onto your hair once. Use your fingers or a comb to work it through your hair until all of your hair is covered. Style your hair as usual with your curling iron, flat iron or blow dryer.

Tips

  • Always use a heat protectant spray on your hair before you plan to use a curling iron, hot rollers, a flat iron, or a hair dryer.
  • Heat styling can damage your hair, even if you use a protective spray. It is good to limit your use of heat styling to once or twice a week.
