Method 1 of 3: Mix regular green paint

  1. Gather your supplies. Many people will immediately reach for a paintbrush when mixing paint, but this is actually not the best option. Not only do you run the risk of ruining your paintbrush, but you also don't get a nice even color. Instead, opt for a palette knife or popsicle stick.

Here's a full list of what you will need:

    • Blue paint

    • Yellow paint

    • Paint palette, paper plate, or cup

    • Something to mix the paint with (palette knife, spoon, popsicle stick, etc.)

  2. Put a drop of yellow paint the size of a coin on a palette. This counts as "part yellow". When mixing paint you work with "parts" to get the ratio right.
  3. Add a drop of blue paint to it. To start, make the blue drop the same size as the yellow drop. This will give you a basic shade of green. If you want to make a different shade click here.
  4. Know that painter's blue and yellow paints come in a variety of shades. When purchasing professional-quality acrylic, oil, or watercolor paint, pay close attention to the colors. You will notice that some of the blues have a more greenish hue, while others have a more purple hue. You may also notice that some of the yellows have a greener hue and others a more orange hue. Choosing the wrong shade of blue or yellow will result in a cloudy, muddy yellow.
  5. Know when to add black or white paint to your green. If you want to lighten your green to a pastel shade, add some white. If you want to shade your green to a more dull shade, add a little black. Start with a pinhead-sized drop.
