Peeling a conventionally grown carrot gets rid of many of the pesticides that usually accumulate in the skin. Many people also peel carrots because they like it to look better. Peeled roots are shiny, bright orange in color and all have the same color and shape. Whether you want to use a vegetable peeler or paring knife, you're good to go.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using a vegetable peeler

  1. Rinse the roots under cold running water. Brush them off with a nylon bristled brush to remove all dirt and impurities from the surface. Rinsing is necessary to remove all pesticides and residual debris.
    • Sometimes carrots look a bit scruffy or weird. That will change when you peel them.
  2. Place a bowl on your counter. The bowl will collect the carrot peels during peeling. You could also peel the carrots over the trash can, but then you will be less accurate because you don't have a surface to hold the carrot against.
    • You can also just peel the carrot on a cutting board and throw the carrot skins in the trash when you're done. It doesn't matter which method you choose.
  3. Hold the root between the thumb and forefinger of your non-dominant hand. Then turn your non-dominant hand over so that your palm is facing the ceiling (and your hand is under the root). Tilt the carrot at a 45 degree angle above the bowl with the tip pointing down into the bowl.
    • The hardest thing about peeling is to do this quickly without cutting yourself. If you keep your hand under the root, the second problem is solved in any case.
  4. Place the tip of the carrot on a cutting board. Hold the thick top portion of the root with your non-dominant hand. The carrot should be at a 45 degree angle to the cutting board.
    • Hold the root between your thumb and forefinger, then turn your hand over so that your palm is facing the ceiling. Your hand is under the root and supports it.
  5. Place the carrot on the cutting board and use the paring knife to cut off the tip and top. Throw those pieces of carrot along with the skins in the bio bin or on the compost heap.
    • Place the carrot on a separate plate and continue working until you have peeled all the carrots. Rinse all peeled carrots before using.

Tips

  • If you have organic carrots, remember not to peel them. The peel contains many nutrients that are lost by peeling the carrot.
