Title pages are not particularly difficult to create, but you should follow certain guidelines depending on the style guide provided by your teacher. The three major style guidelines are American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA) style, and Chicago style. Check with your tutor if you are unsure of their preference, although generally APA is used in the natural sciences, MLA in the humanities, and Chicago in the religious studies.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Create an APA title page

  1. Place your title at the bottom of the page. Use the Enter key to move your title page down. It should be about 1/3 from the top of the page.
    • If your title is particularly long or has a colon in the middle, you can place it on two lines.
    • Omit extra words and abbreviations. In APA style you have to be as precise as possible.
    • Use capital letters. This means that you write important words with a capital letter, such as nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives, but that unimportant words such as articles, prepositions and conjunctions are not capitalized. In short, do not capitalize words of three letters or less unless they are at the beginning of the title or after punctuation marks.
  2. Place your name below the title. Press the Enter key once. Enter your name. Use your first name, insertions or initials, and your last name. Omit titles such as "Dr".
    • If more than one person is responsible for the paper, include all the names of the authors.
    • Separate two names with the word "and". Separate three or more names with commas and the word "and" between the last two names.
  3. Add your institution. The institution is your university or other organization to which you are affiliated. Basically, you're telling the reader where you've done the majority of your research.
    • If multiple authors are associated with the same institution, place the name of the institution after the list of authors.
    • If you have multiple authors associated with different institutions, separate the names of the authors and write the name of each author's university under his or her name.
  4. Place your title page at line spacing 2. Select your text. Go to the Paragraph group in the "Home" tab of a Word document and click the Line and Paragraph Spacing button. Click "2" in the drop-down menu. Your text should now be double-spaced.
  5. Center your title horizontally. Highlight the text on the page. On the main menu, on the Home tab, click the button in the Paragraph group to center the text. The selected text should move to the center of the screen.
  6. Add a running heading to it. A continuous heading appears at the top of the paper and is repeated on every page. On the first page, create the heading "Running heading: KEY TITLEWORDS". You use all capital letters for the title here.
    • Your header is not your full title. Rather, it is two or three keywords. It should generally be less than 50 characters.
    • Use continuous page numbers to add a page number in the top right corner. Just add the number, not "p." Or "pg."
    • To add a header in most newer word processors, simply double-click in the header area at the top of the page. You will not be able to see the header area before clicking. Just double click near the top of the page and header section should appear.
    • You should also click on "Different First Page" at the top of the screen, as your other headers omit "Continuous Header:" and simply show the title of your paper in capital letters.
  7. Format your page properly. Use a 12-point Times New Roman font. In addition, make sure all margins are set to 2.54 cm (or 1 inch).

Method 2 of 3: Create a title page in the MLA style

  1. Save the title page unless it is required by your teacher. The MLA format does not require a title page. So, unless your teacher asks for a title page, you can just center the title on the first page of the paper and start your text below.
    • When displaying the title this way, make sure to include your name, teacher's name, subject and date. Place double spaces in front of the title and the information you just entered on the left.
    • Also put a header on the page to the right, with your last name and page number on the same line.
  2. Continue at the bottom of the page. Again, you start about 1/3 from the top of the page. Type the title of your paper. Put everything on one line, even if there is a subtitle separated by a semicolon. If it's too long to fit on a line, divide it by the semicolon. Use capital letters only for important words in the title.
  3. Place your name below the title. Skip a line (leave a line blank), and write "through". Below that you write your name.
    • If there are two writers, separate the names with the word "and".
    • If there are more than two scribes, separate the names with commas and place the word "and" between the last two names.
  4. Continue to the bottom of the page. At the bottom you will see three lines and the bottom line should be just above the margin. On the top line of it, write the name and department of your class. Below that the name of your teacher. You write the date under it again.
  5. Center the text horizontally. Select the text on the page. Under the Paragraph group, click the button to center the text.
  6. Format the title page. The title page, like the rest of your paper, should have margins of 1 inch (2.54 cm) all around. You should also use a readable font, such as Times New Roman, in 12 point size.

Method 3 of 3: Create a title page in the Chicago style

  1. Type your title 1/3 from the top of the page. Press Enter until you are about 1/3 of the page down. Type your title in capital letters, and try to keep it on one line unless there is a subtitle. If the title has a subtitle, put it on the line below. Place a colon at the end of the title if a subtitle follows.
  2. Continue at the bottom of the page. Place the cursor at least four or five lines down the page. This section of the title page should start about halfway down the page or more.
  3. Write your name, class and date. Enter your name. Press the Enter key and type your class information. Below you place the date.
    • Write the name of the month. However, the day and year must be in numerical format and separated with a comma.
    • For example: February 1, 2013.
  4. Center the text. Select the text on the page. Below the Paragraph group, click the button to center text.
  5. Make sure your text is formatted correctly. Use 1 to 1 ½ inch (2.54 cm to 3.81 cm) margins, which should also apply to the rest of your paper. Make sure your font is legible. Chicago recommends Times New Roman or Palatino in 12-point font, but 10-point is also allowed.

Tips

  • Contact your teacher about any special requirements for your page title. Special requirements can include job-specific information such as the course name and number, and due date.
