To bleach jeans, they are washed with bleach and pumice stones. You can also bleach your jeans yourself at home with a bleaching mixture. You need an old pair of jeans and a well-ventilated room for this. You can choose from a variety of techniques and patterns, including ombré, tie-dye and striped. Learn how to bleach your jeans by following one of the methods below.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Bleach with a dip bath

  1. Look for dark jeans that you dare to bleach and don't mind being ruined. Jeans with a dark wash will give the clearest results.
  2. Look up some old clothes that you don't mind getting bleach on during bleaching.
  3. Take the bleach, water, bucket, and jeans outside to a well-ventilated area. Bleach is a toxic chemical that you should not swallow or inhale.
  4. Decide if you want to give your jeans a tie-dye effect. This is the circular flower pattern seen on most bleached and tie dye jeans.
    • To do this, grab some of the denim with your fingertips. Wrap an elastic around that piece of fabric until the elastic is very tight.
    • Do this with other parts of your jeans as well. Make as many "tie-dye flowers" as you want.
  5. Consider tying the jeans even further or bundling them together by wrapping large elastics around the legs.
  6. Do not tie the buttocks and waistband at the top of the pants.
  7. Pour 2.5 liters of water into the bucket. Then add 1.5 liters of bleach.
    • Adding more bleach to the mixture will help bleach the jeans faster, but it will also weaken the denim. Sometimes you get holes in your pants in unexpected places.
  8. Put on your rubber gloves.
  9. Push the jeans into the bucket with the bleach mixture. Dip the waistband and bottom of the pants in first. Leave the jeans in the mixture for about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how light you want the fabric to be.
  10. After 45 minutes, turn the jeans over to treat the areas that you were not able to submerge at first.
  11. Turn the jeans over again so that the buttocks and waistband are at the bottom. Do this if you want an ombré effect, with a lighter top and dark legs.
  12. Remove the jeans from the bucket of bleach after 1 to 1.5 hours. Place it on a sidewalk or on gravel. Rinse the jeans lightly with a garden hose.
  13. Cut the elastics off with scissors.
  14. Put your jeans in the washing machine. Wash the jeans with cold water and without detergent.
  15. Remove the jeans from the washing machine and see if the fabric has bleached enough. You can now start wearing the jeans.
    • You can always repeat the process to bleach the fabric even more. After the first wash, wash the jeans with detergent as you normally do.

Method 2 of 2: Bleach by spraying

  1. Look for jeans. Gather pieces of fabric and wrap elastics around them. This creates a tie-dye effect.
  2. Mix 2 parts water with 1 part bleach in a spray bottle.
    • You can make a stronger bleach mixture by using 1 part water and 1 part bleach. However, this can cause holes in the fabric.
  3. Take your jeans outside to a concrete or metal surface. Put on your old clothes, as well as rubber gloves.
    • Don't put your jeans near grass or plants. They will die from the bleach mixture.
  4. Wet your jeans thoroughly with a garden hose. Dampen the fabric, but make sure it does not drip.
  5. Spray the bleach in a pattern around the elastics and all over your jeans. With this spray method you can choose not to bleach some areas of your jeans.
  6. Flip the jeans over and repeat the process on the other side.
    • Make sure you spray the areas with the elastics well.
  7. Allow the bleach to work in the fabric for 20 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on how light you want the jeans to be.
  8. Cut the elastics off with scissors.
  9. Put your jeans in the washing machine. Wash the jeans with cold water and without detergent. Take the jeans out and wear them.

Tips

  • To get an ombré effect, dip the top or bottom part of your jeans in the bleach mixture and dip more and more of the fabric into the bucket over the course of an hour. Remove the jeans and wash without detergent.
  • If you want to make stripes, pour some of the bleach mixture into the bucket over the front of your jeans. Wipe the bleach down towards the pipes with a nylon brush. Swipe in one direction only. Repeat this on the back if you wish. Do not allow puddles of bleach to form.
