Whether it's headphones, new charging cables or a nice phone case, when you buy accessories for your phone, you want them to last. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. When you buy a new phone case, it usually fits snugly around your mobile device, giving it the protection it deserves. But some phone cases can stretch or wear out over time. In particular, phone cases that are made of silicone (or have a silicone component) often become loose after years of use. Don't worry, you'll be amazed at what a little boiling water can do.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Cooking a phone case

  1. Bring water to a boil. Make sure there is enough water to submerge the phone. Pretend you're cooking pasta, only with completely inedible plastic instead of spaghetti.
    • Make sure you only put the silicone case in the water, not your phone! If there are any hard plastic components on the case, remove them before proceeding.
  2. Gently lower the cover into the boiling water. Let the case heat up for 30 seconds to 1 minute. The case expands as it gets warmer. This ensures that the phone case becomes flexible and processable.
    • Make sure the cover does not touch the bottom or sides of the pan to prevent it from melting.
  3. Use pliers throughout the process. While the phone case is taking a hot bath, keep your hands and fingers away. You need to use a good pair of tongs that you can easily manipulate to move the case in the water while it gets warm.

Part 2 of 2: Let the cover cool down and put it back on

  1. Remove the cover from the boiling water with tongs. Place a bowl of cold water nearby. Immerse the phone case in the bowl of cold water. The cold water quickly stops the cooking process. The case shrinks as it cools.
  2. Remove the cover from the cold water after 30 seconds to 1 minute. The case does not have to be ice cold when you take it out, but you should be able to pick it up with your hands without any problems. It is okay if the case still feels slightly warm, as long as it has cooled down considerably.
    • The cold water bath does not have to be ice cold, but it is cold enough to cool down the hot phone case. The colder the water, the less time it will take to move on to the next step.
  3. Dry the silicone cover thoroughly. Use a clean dishcloth or tea towel to fully wrap and dry the phone case. You must ensure that the material that comes into contact with your phone is not wet to avoid damaging the phone.
    • If you don't have a tea towel, a large towel is fine too. Again, make sure the towel is clean as the dried up case will go back on your phone.
    • Do not use kitchen paper to dry the cover, as pieces of paper may remain in the cover.
    • Also, do not use hand dryers, as the direct heat can affect the composition of the case.
  4. Place the silicone case back on your phone. As the silicone material cools further, it will continue to shrink and fit the parts of the phone case or phone itself more tightly. Once completely cooled down, you should have a phone case that is tighter and has regained some of its original shape.
