Contacts that you have added through different accounts, such as Google and WhatsApp, are automatically saved to the respective accounts. Contacts that you have saved on your device's storage should be backed up if you plan to empty your device. The fastest way to back up contacts stored on your Android device is to copy them to your Google account.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Finding your contacts

  1. Tap the "Contacts" or "People" app on your device. The time this process takes depends on the manufacturer of your device and the contacts app you are using.
  2. Tap the ⋮ or More button. It is usually in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Contacts to Display or Display Options. You may need to tap the "Settings" option first. The wording may vary by device.
  4. Tap an account to view the contacts. When you select an account, you will see all contacts stored on that account. Every contact connected to an account is automatically backed up, which can be restored once you are logged in again.
    • For example, if you tap on "WhatsApp", all your WhatsApp contacts will appear. These contacts are stored on WhatsApp servers, so you don't have to worry about a backup.
  5. Tap Phone to view the contacts stored on your phone. These are contacts that are stored in your device's memory and need to be transferred to another account, such as Google, or exported to a file. Contacts saved in the memory of your device will be deleted when you reset the device to factory settings.

Part 2 of 3: Copy contacts from your phone to Google

  1. Open your "Contacts" app in the Phone view. Your contacts app should now show only the contacts that are stored in your device's memory.
    • Note that the terminology in this section varies by phone manufacturer. The features described below may not be available on all devices.
  2. Tap the More or ⋮ button.
  3. Tap Settings or Manage Contacts.
  4. Tap Move device contacts to or Copy. The wording of this option can vary considerably from device to device. Look for a tool that will transfer your contacts from one account to another.
    • If you don't have the option to copy contacts to your Google account, you can also export the contacts as a file and then import them into Google.
  5. Tap Phone in the From list. If you are asked to choose the account from which you want to move contacts, choose the storage of the phone.
  6. Tap your Google account in the To list. Select your Google account from the list of accounts you can move contacts to. This ensures that they appear as soon as you log back into your Google account, and that you can access them via contacts.google.com.
  7. Tap Copy or OK. Your contacts will be copied to your Google account. This may take a while if you have to copy a lot of contacts.
  8. In your browser, go to contacts.google.com. You can verify that your contacts have been successfully added here.
  9. Log in to your Google account. Log in to the same Google account where you copied the contacts.
  10. Find the newly added contacts. If you see your phone's contacts here, it means they are backed up on Google. You may have to wait for your contacts to sync.

Part 3 of 3: Exporting your contacts as a file

  1. Tap the "Contacts" app on your device. If you can't copy the contacts directly to your Google account, you can export them to a file and then import that file into your Google account.
  2. Tap the ⋮ or More button.
  3. Tap Contacts to Display or Display Options. You may need to tap the "Settings" option first.
  4. Tap the Phone option. As a result, the contacts app will only show the contacts that are stored on your device, which are the contacts that you need to back up.
  5. Tap the ⋮ or More button again.
  6. Tap Settings or Manage Contacts.
  7. Tap the Import / Export or Backup option.
  8. Tap Export.
  9. Tap your device's storage. This will keep the contacts file on your phone's memory.
  10. Tap the contacts you want to export. When prompted, tap the contacts you want to export. Since you've limited the view to the contacts stored on your phone, you can usually just tap "Select All".
  11. Wait while your contacts are exported. You will receive a notification at the top of the screen as soon as all contacts have been exported.
  12. In the contacts app, tap the ⋮ or More button.
  13. Tap Settings or Manage Contacts.
  14. Tap the Import / Export option.
  15. Tap Import.
  16. Tap your Google account. This ensures that the imported contacts are immediately added to your Google account.
  17. Tap the contacts file. When prompted, tap the file you just created. This will import the contacts from the file to your Google account and make an online backup.
  18. In your browser, go to contacts.google.com.
  19. Log in to your Google account. Log in to the same account where you copied the contacts.
  20. Find the newly added contacts. If you see your phone's contacts here, it means they are backed up on Google.
    • You may have to wait for your contacts to sync.
